SMU Preps for Navy
Two-a-Days Over as First Day of School Arrives

DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU Mustangs continued preparation for their season-opener against Navy at the Pettus Practice Fields on Thursday afternoon. The Ponies went through a two-and-a-half-hour workout in full pads.

It was the first day of classes at the school and two-a-day workouts concluded on Wednesday.

"For the first day of class, we had a very good workout," said Mustang head coach Phil Bennett. "Sometimes guys' minds start to wonder once school begins but I was very pleased with our attention and effort."

Before practice, SMU alum and Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt addressed the team for 15 minutes. Hunt played wide receiver at SMU from 1952-55 and had his No. 80 jersey retired during the 2000 season.

"It was very generous of Lamar to spend that time with our players and coaches but not surprising because he is such a generous man," Bennett said. "He related his love of SMU to our guys."

The Mustangs will hold a walk though on Friday afternoon in Ford Stadium, prepping for Saturday's final fall scrimmage. The scrimmage will be held in Ford at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Gameweek preparations for Navy begin with a Sunday practice.

In other SMU football news, wide receiver Chris Cunningham is recovering today after undergoing surgery on his broken left on Wednesday. Cunningham should began rehabilitation in about a month.
