Having not seen the game, I can't comment on our QB controversy. All I can ask is, this fall which QB will either win or at least not lose us games. Those may be very different questions. Phillips might be a QB who will win us game, but also lose us games. Eckert/Romo may not win us games, but won't lose us games. Do you play the seniors and let Phillips do mop up duty and play scout squad to get the reps against our first string so that in 2006 he is the man, or do you start him this season? My quess is that Bennett is not a risk taker this year and will probably start the safer quarterbacks. If Phillips shines in a mop up role during a game, then Bennett might switch.

Never said Coaching doesn't matter-Never did. BUT once a coach is handed a talent like Chris Phillips and chooses two leftovers who will never be any better than below average Division 1A QBs over a talent like Phillips then I will be all over that Coach. Nobody should have expected Chris Phillips to be a polished QB coming from the Dallas private school leagues which are equivalent to 2A football for the most part. And yet we get guys coming on here and claiming he's a washout by the 3 game into his second season. He's got skills, and he's definitely got the composure-if you can't polish that kind of talent-then we got a coaching problem. I take comfort in knowing a lot of the same people don't think Vince Young is a good college QB. Finally, BULLETIN: all great NFL QBs throw sidearm on ocassion especially in a spread offense-I've heard many interviews from QBs and offensive coordinators discussing that its really acceptable in many situations. But I do agree Eckert makes great reads on 5 yard passes. Wow! he passed for a whole 87 yards on 13 completions-I take that back Eckert threw some great 3 yard passes where the receiver added 3 yards.

Chill a little guy.

Chris Phillips will be a sophomore next year, and Eckert a senior. He's also an experienced starter for his junior college years as well as last year. He led us to 3 wins vs. 0 for the year before. They both looked fairly equal last Saturday. 87 yards on 13 completions doesn't look a whole lot worse than 127 on 15 including a 30 yard miraculous catch by Hawkins from Longview (should have been the Lobos) Pine Tree.

Actually, I think our offense is based on the short ball control passing game setting up the run.

It's nice to see the Longview Pine Tree Pirates have a 'star' for a change! :D Speaking of Mustangs from Longview, does anyone ever see the Bobos around town anymore?

I wasn't able to see the spring game. The summaries presented here are most appreciated. And the nice thing is to see posters discussing things like which experienced QB is best (as compared to which QB in the past will get a recording contract, which QB will get in a fight during an intramural game, and so forth). Also there are plenty of pleasant surprises like size, speed and depth. I can't remember when we had those issues to seriously discuss. All in all, a much better spring than previous years (based on the opinions and type of discussions on this board).

And while we're talking about the Longview types .... whatever happened to our friend Mustangs35SMU (his name is something close to that). Haven't seen a post in a while.

Good question. I hope he's well. I believe he's been in the hospital a few times in recent years.

there ain't going to be a running game unless Phillips is the QB. Offensive Coordinators are going to love to watch SMU throw 5 yard passes without having to worry about Phillips running the "Read Option". That single play could easily account for 65-75 yards a game with Phillips at QB and Dorsey et al at RB.

On the QB discussions...Believe that a top flight program gunning for a national championship needs a solid stay in the pocket passer to win the game...look at the QBs for every national champion since Weinke @ FSU.

That said...teams such as ours needs to take its best athletes and get them on the field. Look at Va Tech with Vick...they took a strong armed but horribly inaccurate passer, placed him on the field and said make plays. That is what we can hope for with Phillips. A big strong armed running back who happens to line up behind center.

Eckert might be the better passer but mobility is king when the line gives the QBs two seconds on a good play to throw the ball.

Got to believe the O-line is going to be much improved this year. Hopefully QB's running for their lives will not be the norm any more. That doesn't mean that a QB run isn't good or needed once in a while during the game...if for no other reason than to keep the opposing defense honest and off balanced.

You got that right! Phillips adds another dimension to the offense. You're being generous when you refer to "5 yard passes"... I saw more than enough -5 yard passes last season (and a couple on Saturday). Opponents will have to prepare on several fronts if we go with Phillips. I can envision him having a breakout game against Baylor, setting the tone for the season.

You're right, Berger about 1 thing.

I recall seeing alot of 5 yd passes last season, especially after our announcer would say, "3rd/4th down for Texas Tech". Then, I saw a 5 yd pass. And then I heard that same announcer say, "1st down, Texas Tech".

Spread offenses need small plays, too, to help exploit the deep ball.

Personally, after watching all the catches made by Ryan Kennedy Saturday, I'll be happy with a 5yd pass to him on most any down :!:

If we are assuming that our offensive line can not block then it does not matter what QB we have in there. Eckert will throw picks, Phillips and Romo will tuck and run and the offense will not score on long drives. Expect a long season.

If we assume the line does a good job then we have flexibility but Eckert seems the pick.

If, in the spring, the coach is planning for bad line play then, to me, that would be a problem. The idea that now our coach should be putting all our QB eggs into the least experienced QB basket and if he does not he is some kind of idiot is absurd. I am afraid that Stallion has "Stars" in his eyes.

It is not time to assume bad line play and to paint the coaching staff into a corner.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!!
