I saw the "SMU is Dallas' Team" T-shirts in the bookstore this weekend and the yard signs all over the campus area, too.

Drives me nuts...Marketing 101...highlight or sell something that is already at least slightly believed.

Seems we should be saying..."SMU wants to be Dallas' Team."

Right. People all over Big D are mentally answering back to that slogan and the answer isn't good.

Rather than criticize, do you guys have any bright ideas? I thought it was a good attempt but what else are they going to do.

I hear you...lot's of people on this board hear you...and lot's of us have good ideas because we went to school here...we know the mind set of our fellow alums...and we care.

My opinion is that the main problem is we don't have anybody making decisions that truly knows us. We hire people usually from distant state schools...and they try the stuff that worked for them there.

You want some bright ideas? OK...how about we organize the Boulevard and Stadium seating according to the decades we graduated so that SMU grads can socialize with the guys we went to school with in and out of the stadium?

How about we organizing a Lettermen's Mustang Spring Fun Run through campus like we did in the 80's?

How about we put the Corral as close to Mockingbird as possible so newbies and strangers won't be so intimidated to walk into our campus?

How about moving the family section back to the south side so kids can run around close to their parents?

How about giving every kid free popsicles when it's hot so parents can catch a break?

How about having the players shake hands with kids in the south end zone when the games are over?

Ideas are easy...

I think the consensus is that TCU is DFW's college team..

They just showed an aerial shot of Dallas on Sunday night football and it was hard to miss the gigantic Peruna on the Omni...good placement.

Saw that. Very cool.

Sounds good in theory, but how do you sell tickets like that? Blvd part is fine but organizing that would be extremely difficult especially trying to work with people who want they're reoccurring spots.

How about we organizing a Lettermen's Mustang Spring Fun Run through campus like we did in the 80's?

I wasn't around that time obviously lol but sounds good and nothing too hard to organize I imagine.

How about we put the Corral as close to Mockingbird as possible so newbies and strangers won't be so intimidated to walk into our campus?

The problem is that it's not near where all the fun is. I was thinking the practice field near the stadium but that might just tempt people to leave since their cars across the street

How about moving the family section back to the south side so kids can run around close to their parents?

Lol the kids might not want to be by their parents but it might keep then under control

How about giving every kid free popsicles when it's hot so parents can catch a break?

Not in the budget lol

How about having the players shake hands with kids in the south end zone when the games are over?

Definitely but I feel that won't add fans just make current ones happy

Ideas are easy...

Ideas are easy but the question is are they effective

True, saying SMU is Dallas' team is presumptuous as hell. Dallas likes winners and SMU has not won enough for Dallas to care. Winning is the only thing that can give these marketing campaigns any real effect.

If Larry Brown keeps going like we are going bball will give us enough credibility to market as "dallas' team". In 2 years SMU will be a major topic for athletes across south dallas

I discussed the campaign with some of the faculty. They all thought it was a joke and should be changed to "SMU is the Park Cities' team". I have to agree, SMU has absolutely **** outreach to non-rich DFW folks(aka the vast majority of people leaving within a 30 mile radius of our campus).

Larry Brown is our best hope of changing our perception anytime soon. Really got to start passing some tickets to local schools so kids of all ages interested in bball start becoming fans. Furthermore, the school as an academic institution needs to shed its reputation as a rich person only school. Reach out more towards community colleges, get non Park Cities high-schools to take more trips to the campus. Have SMU house more types of summer/educational camps of all types to get local smart kids integrated with the school. The school has to constantly reach out beyond its myopic local community and really ingrain some roots into DFW as a whole.

Hell...we aren't even Park Cities' team. Keep winning and win big...it's our only hope.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
