I mean technically we were WAC rivals, plus JJ had a rivalry with csuf at Hawaii. If we don't get to play old swc mates, playing former wac members is the next best thing right?
Go ponies!
I wish I had your positivity but I just can't t be positive when this is what the team desired and JJ wanted this bowl from the beginning. I'm not hating on Fresno just the desire this program had for such a mediocre bowl.
I would gladly buy 10 tickets to the Iowa st vs SMU game (if it were possible) before ever buying one ticket to lame [deleted] Hawaii bowl. I really really hope the big east doesn't try to get that bowl tie in. If they took Tulane and ecu then it can't be too much of a stretch.
Yeah playing Fresno isnt ideal, I would much rather see us show to the nation we can beat a big time program (especially after ugly losses to baylor, tcu, & a&m). I agree with a lot of people on this board that we should be better than 6-6, but in October I didnt think we'd even get a shot to play in a bowl. So I think this is a good opportunity to beat a conference champ on national TV. Plus, it'd be nice to shut the arrogant fresno fans up. They won four games last year and all of a sudden think they're Notre Dame.

Fresno State has a reputation of playing anywhere anytime and that exposure has given them name recognition. That is good for us if we can beat a team with better than average name recognition.
I think this is a good match up for us and a same but positive opportunity for us to improve our name brand.

They have at least 3 great players at QB, RB (1460 yards rushing) and WR (1168 yards receiving). This is probably the best team we've played in a bowl. If anything, SMU is the thing that just doesn't belong"
I said this over a week ago. If we don't play our best FULL game of the year, it could get ugly.

We have home field advantage.

What would you have written on Facebook and Twitter to generate interest/excitement about this matchup? "SMU plays a team we haven't seen in years and without a single player most fans can name"?
Of course not. You have to find an angle, and if you have a better it, more constructive angle, maybe they'd like to hear it.
Bowl games have a way of taking funny turns. Recall how how the Mustangs were supposed to get their asses handed to them by Nevada? Also remember how SMU "should have" beaten Army?
The Fightin' JJs better be well prepped and come out hot in Hawaii or the Bullydogs will eat our lunch and supper. Here's hoping the Fresno players drink too many Mai Tais and greet the coin toss hungover and unwilling to exert themselves.
Hope the players come out with a chip on their shoulder, and get a win on National TV. Maybe we'll win this bowl, and June can exit stage right feeling accomplished.

There's no reason to hype about it because nobody reasonably can go and heck even watch it if they're traveling. It should be 4 bowls in 4 years and leave it that. I just think personally saying this is a rivalry game makes us look like we desire to be mediocre. I know I've seen people write on both FB and Twit having the same argument that this is not for the fans.
Let F-state talk all they want … the game is played between the lines. F-state football is a thug program, if you have a pulse you can get in. That said, they have been a good program over the last 10 years … good games and good wins against good opponents. The pony’s will be ready to play (we will have to be) .. and I hope every single player on F-State thinks a HS could beat us. I’m sure the F-State coaches are pounding the Nevada game into their heads.
If you want a little spice for the match-up, or trying to create a rivalry atmosphere .. try this. Mason coached LB’s there before coming to the hilltop, and F-State came after him hard last year when their HC spot opened up … and I believed floated some nice coin at him.

Yep, Fresno was frustrating. First 6 possessions led to 6 TDs.
And while their stadium only seats about 10k more than ours, seems twice as large.
