Info on Adam James from Celina Football FriendThe is just gossip but I must say informed gossip. I present it for what
it is worth. I have a young friend who played football for Celina 2000-2003 who knows Adam and Craig James well related to football, school, and church. My friend is a baseball pitcher with 91 mph fastball. I give this info just for context. Last night, I asked my young friend about Adam's interest in continuing football and he told me that Adam would most likely NOT play football that he wanted to play baseball and that his dad has been steering him away from football. That info doesn't necessarily fit with what this thread has been debating and the comments that Craig made in the DMN - but I present it here just as another piece of information. Obviously, we can watch and in about 4-5 months we will know - The Rest of the Story.
I was wondering if baseball might be a part of this, somehow. Craig was a baseball star in high school. I dont remember offhand who drafted him, but he was good enough to turn pro immediately. His brother Chris did play baseball professionally, and had a much longer career than Craig. Craig was hit hard by back, knee and shoulder injuries, very early on in his professional career, and that probably cut his time on the field in half. I wouldnt be at all surprised if Craig is steering his son towards baseball, its something I've speculated on before. It just makes more sense from a parents perspective, because of the chance of injury.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
Because of the chance of injury, because average baseball careers are longer and because salaries for young players (except the very highest NFL draft choices) are higher.
Craig also was hampered by the fact that he spent a few years running behind USFL blocking. It's amazing he still walks without a limp. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Admittedly, since this thread is long, I haven't carefully read every post, but has anyone asked the magic question: "Can this kid help the team?"
If the answer is "yes", then recruit him and offer him. If his measurements are anywhere near the 6'3" 228 listed, then I don't buy the argument that he's too small to play TE (or even DE). If he needs to put on weight, then he should be able to pack on 25-30 lbs. during a redshirt year and gain some strength and he'll be fine. SMU doesn't have to be the first to offer. It'll be easy enough to determine if James is a D-1 quality player or not simply by watching to see if any other D-1 programs offer. If not, then you have your answer. If the answer is "no", you ask the kid to come to SMU anyway as an invited walk-on, simply because of who he is.
