The band and cheerleaders don't fly out at the same time.

maybe we should only send half of the coaches.

Rick Hart tweeted me on 11/30 that "costs not covered" with respect to band. June should have stepped up after dissing the band after A&M, Tulane, and Rice.

What did he say about the band after those games?

What did he say about the band after those games?
A&M: Yelled directly at drum major and band to play over the Aggie alma mater so he could get off the field.
Tulane and Rice: Could not stay on the field for the 75 seconds or it takes to sing "Varsity". Stormed directly off the field taking his staff and all but about 4 players. And the band traveled 20 and 10 hours, respectively to support the football team.
Overall, has never once thanked the band for support.

I'm no expert on transportation, but if the band traveled 10 hours to Houston aren't they doing something wrong?

I assume sponygirl meant forth and back, but if not then yes we have a real travel issue at hand!

im a fan of the band, but why do we have three threads dedicated to whining about the band?

Thanks, I thought it was obvious the times were RT, but I guess not. The point is that the band puts in long hours and deserves some recognition. Their Facebook comments after these games showed they were very hurt and upset for the slap at them and SMU.
While we're on it, I also find some of the band criticism is really due to a lack of understanding of how our band works. Talk to them and you may discover some of the advantage to the smaller size. Much more overall camaraderie, instruments are specifically chosen for loudness (piccolo instead of flute) and they can travel to more away games because they travel light. And, they all play. We've been involved with other "major" college bands where a good portion of the members faked it. Come sit around them at a game and you might appreciate them a little more.

I was just poking fun at your use of the larger, more impressive round trip number rather than the (to me) more intuitive one way.
Reading some of the PF posts about the band you'd almost think they're martyrs slaving away for our benefit. I don't disagree a bit that the band puts in long hours, but it seems that they're just one of many student organizations/teams who do that in order to represent our alma mater. More importantly, they do it because they enjoy it. Maybe I'm missing something, but at times the beatification of the band on here seems silly when the implication is that other involved folks at SMU aren't as dedicated.
