Thanks Diamond Girl. From the site noted above:
http://www.smu.edu/publicaffairs/colors.asp The University's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Red and Yale Blue as the school colors to symbolize SMU's high standards. Now, almost 100 years later, those colors have evolved into the red and blue you see below. A tan or khaki color is a secondary hue used in many cases as an additional color. Although not an official school color, designers recommend it when a neutral tone is needed. Because colors may differ according to printing method, paper type, and other variables, campus marketing staff strive to achieve a red and blue as close as possible to these Pantone colors. For additional questions about color, contact Creative Director Vicki Olvera at 214-768-7625. All we know from that is that the colors used now are NOT Harvard Red or Yale Blue, but some other shades which have "evolved." Just for purposes of the uniform discussion, the only change I really despised was teh helmets. The darker blue jersey doesn't bother me, but the blue helmet just doesn't work--cannot make out the horse from the stands.
This is what our uniforms should look like (ignore the opponents going into the endzone though).

White helmets certainly look much better than the darker colors; it's nice actually being able to see the mustang on them. The darker jerseys, either red or blue, and white pants were always nice, too, although I'm sure the pants were a b$tch to clean. Who determines what the uniforms are going to be? Do the coaches/AD pay any attention to what fans/alums think?

I believe it's the coaches. I'm not sure if at SMU anyone gives two sh*ts about alumni/boosters, but when OU tried to change to the same font as Houston a couple of years ago, the b*tching from the boosters resulted in going back to the traditional helmets.
Same thing happened when the NY Islanders changed their jerseys.
even the school can't get the 'colors' right with just red & blue v. crimson & yale blue /
besides, the darker the color with white makes for a better contrast & sharper look if we go back to the white helmets & pants - %%^$$!!!! just crimson & yale blue look better than straight red & blue on any uni - BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
the same thing happened when SMU for some reason thought the Jets retro Jerseys would look Neat-O. One thing I'm certain-about the only consensus you can find that our opponents will agree on is that SMU's Jerseys in the early 1980s were one of the best in the country. Who cares if its Yale Blue or Harvard Crimson as long as they look cool. Nobody has ever improved on that look-each has sucked including the blue Mustang, the lines spread out farther on the helmet and pants, the Red Jerseys, the Jets Jersiers, the blue pants Jerseys, the Yale deep blue Jersey, the Blue with the Red Mustang helmets. They have all placed a distant last to the 1980s Jersey.
Hope we keep the ones we got for a long time... but I imagine the next head coach will bring back the Pony Express uniforms as a gimmick to rally the troops... and all that stuff.
Glad Stallion agrees- Pony Express Uniforms with White Shoes. Get rid of the black shoes.
