Big East deal could be worth as little as $60 million per ye

Post by Pony^ »

A new Big East primary TV rights deal might be worth only $60 million-$80 million per year, multiple sources have told CBSSpports.com.

It is believed that the league went into negotiations estimating its rights' worth as significantly higher than $100 million per year.

It is no secret that the league's existence might hinge on that value of that TV deal. It is known that Houston has a provision in its pending deal with the Big East that it can get out of its agreement without penalty if certain revenue projections aren't achieved. Each incoming Big East member has negotiated its own deal regarding conference withdrawl, sources told CBSSports.com

For example, Boise State can reduce its buyout to leave the Big East if there is a drop of 25 percent in current aggregate total revenue. Also, Boise State can have that fee reduced if less than 70 percent of the new TV contract goes to football. Houston, San Diego State, Boise State and SMU, among others, enter the Big East on July 1. Commissioner Mike Aresco said TV negotiations are ongoing and put no date on their completion.

This as been discuss on another thread. BE commish has come out and said that no numbers have even been discussed in negotiations. Several different media outlets are bidding for the BE television rights.

Really old report, but I'd expect to receive 4-7million per all-sport school once its all said and done.

I don't know how Aresco has not talked to people about numbers, it just doesn't make sense. What was he talking about with ESPN? When's the next available spot?

I have heard through sources that a non-traditional media partner with money to spend was leading the bidding before ESPN/Big 10 decided to rip the Big East up even more.

And no, NBC does not count as a "non-traditional media partner." Here's a clue as to who they are: If you search for the right answer, you may find it.

Well...

What was cupcake USA's TV deal?

A couple extra million per year ain't bad. Although I'm sure it's chump change to what some of our alum pull in annually.

Good for our alums, though this will only widen the gap further between SMU and its old SWC rivals. But at least a few of our alums are millionaires...

If the big east can get to 7.8 mil a team and CoC keeps contributing hopefully adding on members we can actually cover our football program costs.... Then hopefully have the ability to move to a conference that gets money to cover all their sports.

6-6 seasons in front of 20K isn't going to get us into a better conference.........

Can one of you guys explain how a few extra million a year is going to help SMU football, increase attendance and help the team win?

The conference is basically the same. Not a whole lot of new teams coming to Ford in the next few yeas. Boise will be fun I guess but you cant really expect them to stick around long term for this.

MWC 16 brahs. Thats where da gold is at.
Trey was using the powers of Gamehendge to allow the show to continue, to give the band the strength it needed to help break through this barrier

By funding June's buyout while our boosters pay another coach

Right. They got an $8 million/year contract back when Utah, BYU, and TCU were in the conference. They shut down their own TV network because nobody cared.
