I threw his name out as a possible SMU head coach, prior to this season, and a few people more or less scoffed at the idea based on his win loss record.
They obvioulsly did not understand what a tough job it was to rebuild the San Jose State program from the ground up, and knew little or nothing about his background in the SEC, and with Dallas Cowboys. By midseason he was out of SMU's league and on his way to bigger and better offers.
Not saying he will be able to turn the Buffs around, that will be a huge challange.
Mac is a coach who can win with less than top talent, recruits to his system, graduates his players, and understands the culture of the smaller and better academic private schools such as Duke and Vanderbilt. Thought he would be a great fit here.

Very possible. CU is a mess. It will be tough to turn it around, but would not bet against him.
