what you aren't taking into account is strength of schedule and BCS membership. would the BCS now have seven confs to split money w/?

would UT leave just b/c of a 5 year drought in beating OU? not likely. would A&M and Tech leave XII just b/c UT couldn't beat OU? not likely.

this whole idea of a "new swc" is a bunch of b.s. that will never happen. it's fun to think about and talk to your buddies about over a beer, but let's be really honest w/ ourselves. it's over. by that, i mean unless some miracle occurs SMU will not be playing in a conference w/ UT, OU, A&M, etc anytime in the near, and most likely far off future. Please don't take this to be negative, as i'm pleased w/ the direction the program is going, but i'm just being honest.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Oh yeah - life is one big bed of roses, too!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Didn't I say it would never happen and that its about as likely as Baylor leaving the Big XII. And yes by the way if UT goes anywhere you can bet $$$$ that TT and A&M would follow those dragging Longhorn udders as far as they need to go to stay in the same conference with them. If UT wanted to join the PAC-10 the Aggies would be asking if Oregon is next to North Dakota. IF UT wanted to join the ACC, the Red Raiders would be asking how do you find Carolina on the map.

I don't know where the idea spun into UT leaving Big XII.

My point was the possible evolution of CUSA into a conference that would be enticing to certain schools looking for championships & bowl opportuniites.

But if you want to veer left into the BCS, ok, try this:

There are currently 6 BCS conferences-

Atlantic Coast Conference
Big Ten Conference
Big Twelve Conference
Big East Conference
Pacific Ten Conference
Southeastern Conference

With 2 additional conferences (total now 8), a sixteen team FB playoff could easily be done. Now, the conference championship games become huge.

Winners of conference championships get byes, then stack 'em anyway you please. Forget the current 12th game discussion. In four weeks of 'post season', you have a champion. Rotate the championship game among Rose, Orange, Sugar, etal (let the bowl bidding begin).

As SMU fans, do we really need to be concerned with how a "National Champion" is crowned? We have a program what has won 6 games one time since 1989 and two seasons ago could not even win a game! Unfortunately for SMU fans, the Pye administration gave our football program a "death penalty" that has lasted far longer than what the NCAA gave to the school.

If you truly are a fan, Snob, set your goals about this program a little higher than what the past reflects.

My point was that SMU fans need to be concerned about having a program that wins games on a consistent basis. We can't even win 4 games a year - until this program can win 10 or 11 games in a season, does it really matter how the NC is determined? It is time for SMU fans to expect more from the football program.....we just gave a coach a contract extension and he has not even come close to a winning season in 3 years! What a great job he has!! Judging by our record since he has been here...Phil Bennett is the most overpaid coach in D1 football.

I am always amused by the dictate that if we only demanded more from administration and our coaches things would rapidly turn around. :x

The hand we were all dealt: DP, coaching changes, reliance on Cotton Bowl, academic restrictions, fan support, recruiting restriction, etc. have been addressed for the most part in the last three years. :)

Expectations are increasing, as they should, but the cry to DEMAND performance as a cure-all is naive and forgets the long journey back we are undertaking.

For 2005 I expect our first winning season, 6-5. Why? We have made the changes, added speed and size and will enjoy depth we haven't seen for decades along with a young team that had to learn difficult lessons against stronger, more experienced teams. 8)

NOW :?:

WE GET VICTORIES THE HARD WAY, WE EARN IT!!!!!!!!

:D

you're AMAZED SMU fans demand a bowl game, championship or tourney once every 15 years or so? Actually, I'm AMAZED that you would once again predict a winning season next year. I'm sure you will continue to AMAZED for years while others have a much better understanding of the problems which have caused an almost unequaled lack of accomplishment by this athletic department in comparison to other Division 1A programs over the last 15 years. I think those people you are AMAZED at are mad as HELL that there are people like you in the athletic department that are AMAZED as well.

Stallion:

Take your pack off! I said "amused", not amazed. Second, why do you think I am in the Athletic Department? Not!

Your anger is misplaced my friend. Your frustration is understood and shared. The last 15 years have cost us a lot of fans, casual or otherwise. We deserved it I'm sure you will agree. What we have been doing for the last three years, as your pointed out, has been more of the same on the field.

But, our response and approach has changed. Acknowledging that while still getting the same results is like the definition of insanity: "Do the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

My point is we are not approaching our dismal performance the same way. Marching on administration, canning the Athletic Department and starting over again with coaches won't fix the problem.

I am giving Phil the benefit of doubt and I do expect a winning season. As a matter of fact I demand it.

I hate to say it, but I question how much of a fan you truly are. Who could not remember that we have had had one winning season since 1989.
