90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:29 pm

Noticed on the SMU Insider email newsletter today that there will soon be a recognition of the "90 Greatests Moments in SMU Football History" to honor 90 years of SMU football history.

Let's get the discussion started here first. What would YOU rank as one of the '90 Greatest Moments in SMU football history'?

Not in any particular order but I'd name:

1. Jerry LeVias being signed to play for SMU
2. The Pony Express/Mustang Mania days of Dickerson, James & McIlhenny
3. Bobby Leach's game ending run against Texas Tech in Lubbock
4. SMU's 1965 Homecoming defeat of the Teasips
5. SMU's defeat of top-ranked OU in the Bluebonnet Bowl
6. SMU's defeat of Notre Dame
7. Doak Walker winning the Heisman Trophy
8. SMU playing in the Rose Bowl

Wow, I was yet born for any of these. Well, I guess I barely made it for the Pony Express, having been born in 1982.

UT had a mediocre team in 1965-not even in the Top 30 victories. All other SMU victories over UT since then were bigger victories than that including 1966, 1980, 1982 and 1984. Cotton Bowl victory in 1981 Cotton Bowl over Pitt, 1935 victory over TCU in what Grambling Rice called the Greatest Game ever played, Walker leading SMU over Bobby Layne and UT in undefeated 1947 season 14-13, Fred Benners leading SMU No. 1 at the time over Ohio St. in 1950 32-27, SMu's loss to Notre Dame when Kyle Rote took the place over an injured Doak Walker and almost broke Notre Dame 3+ year winning streak, Smu's greatest upset over Roger Staubach and Navy in 1963.

Let’s see, of our 16 years post-DP, during 10 years we failed to defeat a single team with a winning record and in 5 other years we defeated only 1 team with a winning record. Folks, that accounts for 15 of the 16 years!!! The 8 teams we have defeated post-DP that had winning records include two wins against Rice, one against a 6-5 Utah team, one against a 7-6 Wyoming team and one against a 6-5 New Mexico team. By far the most impressive win was against an 8-5 Arkansas team that played in the CarQuest Bowl (In our other victories against Arkansas they had records of 4-7, 4-7 and 3-7-1). On average we defeat a team with a winning record once every 2 years

Phil Bennett has yet to defeat a team with a winning record and the combined record of the 6 teams he has defeated is 18-53.

Personally, outside of the ’85 Arkansas victory, I wouldn’t place any game post-DP in my top 90. That ‘Miracle’ was against a non D1-A program.

Stallion, SMU lost to UT 13-7 in 1984, but beat them 44-14 in 1985. It was the 1983 Cotton Bowl that SMU defeated Pitt. 7-3, not 1981.

While this was a particularly downer event, that Holiday Bowl game with BYU was a truly great game. We lost, but we rushed for over 500 yards that game, built a huge lead only to have Jim McMahon bomb us. The mythical Michigan loss in 1964 which supposedly caused Lee Iaccoca to name Ford's new sports car the Mustang might be a great moment. The win over Navy and Roger Staubach in the early 60's ought to make such a list. Peruna killing the Fordham ram at midfield in 1935 (and the subsequent win over the infamous seven blocks of granite which included a young Vince Lombardi). Peruna kicking BEVO. Peruna trying to mate with Misty (the TT horse). All the Peruna events happened on the gridiron.

Here's mine:
1. Firing Tom Rossley and briging on Cavan
2. Beating TCU back in 1997
3. Beating Navy back in 2002
4. Beating Ole Miss in the mid-'90s
5. Crosland kicking that field goal to beat aTm
6. SMU catching that Canine pass in the back of the endzone to beat aTm
7. Not getting the Death Penalty
8. Signing Larry Johnson (he would have made a fine tight end)

Those are my 90 top moments.

I like this list very much. But you forgot the undefeated 2003 season.

Good times.

Both of you are fully qualified to work in the SMU Sports Information Department. I can't wait to see the names of guys like Mike Romo, Bill Kiely and McCown dot your list of SMU's Greatest Football Heroes too. Nobody under 35 should be allowed to vote on SMU's Greatest Sports Momments because none of you guys were out of diapers during a GREAT SMU Sports Event.

Dear Mr. Copeland:

It is with a heavy heart that I must ak you to please return the money I previously submitted for my SMU Football season tickets. Stallion says I am not allowed to be an SMU Football fan. I was not aware of this at the time I submitted my payment and feel that I am entitled to a full refund.

Further, I erroniousy rooted for SMU for the past 14 years, oblivious to the fact that even though I was a student or alumni of this fine university, I was not entitled to do so. As such, I believe I am entitled to a full refund of all sums previously submitted as I was not entitled to enjoy the occasional rare victory that did occur.

Also attached is one well-worn in SMU baseball cap.

Very truly yours,

Dooby

P.S. Last season, I also sumitted 3 canned goods so that friends could get into the game for free. Since that was for charity, you may keep the two cans of green beens and the can of pumpkin pie filling.

Being under 35 and not counting I am still going to throw out the first day of GJF Stadium.

Tailgating on the Boulevard followed by a win over a B-12 school (albeit Kansas, but still counts).

It was a great feeling to have it back on campus...even though every day since has been a shot to the nuts
