Origin. "pipe dream" - The allusion is to the dreams experienced by smokers of opium pipes.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

"Martin Luther King had a '"total pipe dream" and it was for you to shut up. He knew civil rights were at least attainable."

What an odd response. . .

Anyway, conference realignment is a little bit different than the civil rights movement. Conference realignment is not about social justice, equality, the constitution, or the American way. Its about TV, money, power, exposure, exclusion, and ego. I think it would be great if the PAC, Big-12, SEC, and Big-10 were banging down our door. But they aren't and won't because we just don't bring enough to the table in terms of money, TV, or exposure. In other words, we don't offer anything that they can't get somewhere else. I'm all for SMU shooting for the stars. But those of you who think this will end in a gold-plated invitation to the SEC are in for serious disappointment.

I will conclude with the caveat that if I am proved wrong, I will gladly. . .GLADLY. . .eat all the [deleted] that is coming to me for being such a naysayer.

What a wierd board this is. Express satisfaction in the current state versus where we've been and you get filleted. Dream big and you get filleted. Personally, I choose both to be thankful and wish for more.

The BP Bowl? Yeah everybody is going to love the BP Bowl-we can watch those advertisements for another Million times about how great a job they've done in the Gulf. Everytime I see one of those I wonder how many Billions of Dollars they are spending on patting themselves on the back while fighting the claims of those whose livlihood was destroyed by their negligence. I will admit in the last few weeks I've seen some new BP ads that focus exclusively on the Gulf business w/o any self-congratulations-just a BP trademark at the end. I have no problem with the more recent ads.
