JUCO All-America Traylon Shead Signs With SMU
Running Back To Enroll In January; Will Be Eligible For 2013 Season

Dec. 19, 2012

DALLAS - Junior College All-America running back Traylon Shead has signed a National Letter of Intent with SMU and will enroll on the Hilltop in January, Coach June Jones announced today. The 6-2, 225-lb. back will be eligible for the 2013 season.

The Cayuga, Texas, native rushed for team highs in yardage (1,194) and touchdowns (17) for Navarro JC in 2012, earning honorable-mention NJCAA All-America honors. He led Navarro to a final ranking of No. 4 nationally and a 10-2 record.

"With Zach Line graduating, running back will be a position of need in 2013, and Traylon should help fill that void," said Jones. "He was a great high school player and had a great year at Navarro as well. We look forward to having him with us for spring practice and our BIG EAST schedule this fall."

Shead signed with Texas out of high school and spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons in Austin. He redshirted in 2010 and then played for UT against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Rice and Texas Tech in 2011.

As a prep, Shead was ranked as a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 16 running back in the 2010 class. He was an All-American and a three-time First-Team All-State and three-time First-Team All-District selection, earning PARADE All-America honors as a senior. He played in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and finished his career as the state's all-time leader in career TDs (141) and second all-time in rushing yards (10,291 yards).

In addition to being named the two-time Texas 1A Offensive Player of the Year, Shead was also an all-state performer and four-year letterman in basketball and a four-year letterman in track and field, placing eighth in the 100m dash at the state meet as a junior.

big plus that he will be here for spring ball, along with Wimbley, Line and others who may contribute at RB down the road. I don't really worry too much about the RB position. Cupboard is not bare

It would have been a big ole questionmark without Shead-but it was the year Line emerged too

As great as he is as RB he's going to need his OL to make room (doubtful), his QB to be able to throw the deep ball and high completion (hope so), his WR to make the catches consistently short and long balls, and maybe a hurry up offense so he can find the holes in a tired defense (never).

I hate it that JJ and his staff can't recruit. Another retread UT 4 star cast off. And a JC transfer at that! We will never get a redshirt out of him! And how pathetic will our backfield be next year with just 2 four stars in the backfield?

Heavy Sarcasm.

Great pick up.

Hopefully he does better than our other 4 star UT transfer, right.

yes, if we get some receivers who can separate, catch, and run.

You mean the type of receivers June has absolutely no ability to recruit?

Even if the receivers are still horrible, I think GG will get drafted.

He has the size, is pretty mobile, has a great arm and is accurate in practice. Coaches in the NFL are always willing to take a shot on a kid like that, even if he struggles and doesn't win. See Derek Anderson who had more INTs than TDs with Oregon State and Locker with Washington.
