SMU's Coach of the Year
Has to go to Tom Mason. He did an unbelievable job with this team this year. I have never seen an SMU team create so many turnovers. I have always been more of an offensive guy, but this year I couldn't wait to watch our defense to take the field. Without defense this year there is no way a bowl season would have been possible. Congrats to the D and Coach Mason on a great year and Bowl win yesterday
Re: SMU's Coach of the Year
What is this his 4th straight SMU COY award? His bowl game defenses have been absolutely amazing.
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: SMU's Coach of the Year
My only concern is that he was getting way too much face time on ESPN last night. Mason was a finalist for the Fresno job, and clearly their selection committee made the wrong choice. I really hope we can keep him.

I love mason, but where do you get that they clearly made the wrong choice? They won 9 games with the coach they hired.PerunaPunch wrote:My only concern is that he was getting way too much face time on ESPN last night. And a conf. title. DeRuyter is universally considered "the right guy" and his name is starting to be thrown around for big time jobs.Grant Carter wrote:I love mason, but where do you get that they clearly made the wrong choice? Our defense: 4bowl games....only gives up 4 TDs! Outstanding!

How was his defense in "nut-cutting" time against Tulane or against Rice?

Fresno has a very good coach. I wouldn't say they made a mistake.

We need to do whatever is possible to keep Mason around. He was the main reason this team made it to a bowl game

Mason said 4 years ago this group was going to make him look like a genius when they they were seniors. He was right. Mason is great and I hope he never leaves. Good chunk of his praises go to his players.

Re: SMU's Coach of the Year
I've said for the last few years that I think Tom Mason is the Best Defensive Coach in the country in D1. I really like the fact that SMU came out in a four man front to start the game for a while to take away their running game by adding Andy Davis to the lineup at tackle. Brilliant move on Mason's part. I just wish they would have done that at UCF.
