The point is that the BE market is substantially bigger in better markets and the Big East should still command a bigger TV Contract. Admittedly that is conjecture at this point which is one of the areas that need to be further defined before a decision can be made.

But the MWC is not about to ditch Wyoming. Anyway, how is Laramie any worse a market than Hattiesburg or Greenville, NC?

nBE is mid-level but so is MWC

Post by Sam I Am »

There are 4 power conferences plus the ACC. The rest is mid-level football. We will end up with CUSA type schools in the nBE, but that is OK for now. East media is more valuable than the Western exposure. This is the second time that SMU move into a conference only to have it break apart (WAC and BE). We will probably never be BIG time again because we have no fan following. I regret that we will never regain SWC status again, but other schools have been stuck out too.

Mississippi, I will grant you...but North Carolina has Raleigh Durham and Charlotte and that trumps Laramie and Casper

Have you ever been to Laramie, Wy? I have, and with a population of 30,000 there ain't much there.

I admittedly don't know much about North Carolina or their markets. Maybe ECU does pull fans from Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte. I know they consistantly fill their big stadium. In fact, that was my point. You don't necessarily have to be in a big TV market to draw big crowds.

NC population = 9 million
MS = 3 mil
Wyoming 600k?

ECU has alumni all over the Carolinas. We now have 4.5 mil in SC and there are plenty of Pirates here in the Charleston area.

If we have learned anything over this past year it is that we can recruit up to our conference (see LB, not JJ). SMU has too much to offer.

If we were to play TTech in BB 2 years from now, I suspect we would be favored to win. We might even beat them next year.

It's not just the TV contract - the football players are coming out if states in the BE; Texas, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania.
Also, the growth in the county itself is coming from the Sun Belt, something that is by in large much closer than the MWC states, states we are also more likely to recruit students from.

I'm sorry, but don't think this argument is close - if we are not in a major conference we need to be in a Texas - Deep South conference.

I hope SMU stays EAST. In case anybody has forgotten. The Rocky Mountain schools had an "airport meeting." and split off to form the MWC, leaving SMU in a very weak WAC Conference. SMU left to join CUSA Conference. So, let the MWC Conference posters think they have improved their conference. Since the MWC just sold their soul to get Boise St back, the rest of the MWC teams have just become Boise St "bend over girlfriend." While Boise will get to eat steak with the new TV deal, the rest of the MWC will be snacking on peanuts.

As they should. They are the only good team in a sea of mediocrity.

Yes and, as a result, BSU will be able to enjoy the equivalent of the Longhorn Network, while their conference mates are forecasted to get $1m with their new FB TV deal. Hardly significant.

Not exactly....

If without Boise St. the total the MWC was looking at was let's say $30 Million and with Boise St. it jumps to $35 Million and Boise gets to keep the extra 5 million, I dont see how it hurts the other teams. The other teams get the same money they were getting before Boise St. came back and get to play in a conference that is now a little better than before.

SMU needs to just tell a major conference that if they are accepted they don't require any of the money in the pool.

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for writing the check to cover the loss of revenue. That is perfect for us.

A MWC fan told me the SDSU has removed the Big East logo from their website. He thinks it means SDSU is returning to the MWC.
