SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
San Diego paper has a recap of the issues facing SDSU on whether to remain committed to BE or return to MWC. Either option may not offer the revenue this state school needs.
"But know this: SDSU is not getting the sweetheart deal Boise State did."
All and all, a good recap. Issues such as travel might favor staying in the BE for FB, since Big West affiliation will provide a better quality of life for non-revenue sports with BW opponents nearby. BB will face lower competition, but less travel stress vs. returning to a MWC schedule. The argument plays to whether SMU and UH would want to consider a similar move and schedule in Rockies and West Coast.

Not what I would call an uplifting article.
GO MUSTANGS!
Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
Again illustrates that we (SMU/Houston) have all the power in the midget division right now and hopefully can move up soon.
If we stay Big East then that's #6. If we go MWC then that's #6.
Although this whole thing has really been a drain for SMU it shows that were are still relevant and always will be if for nothing else our location. (You hear that ACC/PAC!)

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
After much consideration I have changed my mind. The Boise deal with MWC is horrible for everyone. We should stay in the Big East and see what happens. I agree with Stallion. This horrible deal will lead to the demise of the conference. The MWC will die a slow death. Now we just need to add some decent teams and stabilize the conference. Hopefully, we can keep SDSU and we can all have a big party in San Diego every other year!

Thanks for posting. I think I hope we stay in the Big East. My friends would like to cherry pick both the MW and BE form a new conference across several states (political clout) and become a conference more stable than the ACC with equal football. I don't see it--too much animosity between these two conferences.

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
assuming SDSU stays, wonder what the chances are they could get UNLV to come along for football only and get them into the Big West for their other sports? If the Big East (or whatever we are eventually called) is looking for a western "partner" for SDSU, UNLV appears to be the most attractive (vs Fresno) because they might help bring the Las Vegas Bowl and could be a travel partner for SDSU if those schools wanted to do some non-conference hoops games with Big East schools

I still think we need to consider adding Fresno State, UNLV, and Nevada for all sports. You solidify California, add Nevada, and have a presence in Texas, Florida, and the Northeast. Dump Tulane and ECU and you have 10/12 solid football programs that go bowling regularly and 6/12 solid basketball programs that go to the NCAA tournament regularly.

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
Let's avoid the micro-managing. BE will not dump Tulane and ECU, or Memphis for that matter despite the preference for stronger FB programs or bigger markets.
Aresco should be focused on replacing BSU with a new western partner for SDSU (perfect is BYU, good is Fresno, UNLV or NM), while finalizing a TV agreement in January to allow the Aztecs to remained commitment. SDSU has less than a month to recommit or revert back without major issues. At the same time, SDSU needs to help the Big West become a legitimate BB conference.

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
Idaho Statesman article on how BSU ended up back in the MWC:
"The many hours resulted in a unique arrangement between Boise State and the Mountain West — one that rewards teams for football success and national television appearances and puts the Broncos’ home football rights in a different category than any other conference member."
"First, the deal — CBS will remain the primary rights holder and have first priority on a certain number of games, but not Boise State home games, while paying the league less annually — only covered the 10 teams in the league at the time. That provision would allow Boise State’s home games to be packaged separately.
Second, the deal gave the Mountain West permission to sell the inventory it was getting back to up to two additional networks."

Surprisingly, a Idaho writer suggests the ... "Mountain West deal has seeds of discontent"

The other schools in the MW will just hate the Bronco's for as long as they stay in the MW , or as long as the MW survives anyway.

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
I honestly think that Boise State stayed in the MW instead of BE is based on OUR bowl performance (and others that are joining the NBE). In the MWC they are the king of the conference and no one can compete. In the NBE, they would be ordinary. Look at their performance against Fresno State (my reason for us) and they beat Fresno by 20-10. We DOMINATED. meaning Boise now has legitimate competition in the NBE and may fade from their dominance. It's about retaining their image and keeping the sweet media deal they are getting with the MWC. They want to be the dominate in a small market for a reason. To keep more $ based on their MWC TV deal. Mike Aresco was unwilling to give a single school that kind of favortism. Since he's been a media exec for years, he was unwilling to give that kind of favortism/revinue to one team. Boise was/is not that special to the NBE - really. That's my point.

Re: SDSU: Breaking down Mountain West vs. Big East
Well we were only dominant because June was able to harness the power of the islands to strike down those who oppose him. It's interesting observation ok Boise states move but I also think they thought they get more money out of the MWC than big east.
