HATTIESBURG, Miss. (SMU) - Sophomore Destynee Hives-McCray scored a career-high 24 points and had 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season to lead SMU to a 79-69 win at Southern Miss Thursday night. The Mustangs improved to 12-4 overall, 3-0 in Conference USA for the first time since joining the league in 2005-06, and stretched the win streak to four games with their eight double-digit win of the season.

Freshman Gabrielle Wilkins also had a career high, scoring 14 points as SMU had five in double figures for the first time since Nov. 27, 2011. Wilkins was 6-of-7 from the floor, and Korina Baker was 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 14 points. Alisha Filmore added 13 points, and Keena Mays finished with 10.

The Mustangs went on a 17-0 run over the span of nearly six minutes to take a 20-9 lead over the Golden Eagles (9-7, 1-2 C-USA), and SMU was 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half to take a 43-31 into the lockerroom.

Filmore scored the first five points for SMU, sparking the run with a pair of free throws, and finished the half with nine points. Hives-McCray led the Mustangs with 11 points in the first half, going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Baker hit a pair of 3's during the SMU run, finishing the half with six points.

SMU shot 48.5 percent, 16 of 33, and went 7-for-8 at the free throw line. Southern Miss made 13 of 33 field goals, 39.4 percent, but the Golden Eagles were just 1-for-6 on 3-point attempts and 4-for-8 from the free throw line.

The Mustangs didn't let the Golden Eagles within eight points over the last 20 minutes of the game, matching 10 Southern Miss points in the last four minutes with 10 of their own down the stretch to take the 10-point victory.

Southern Miss finished the game with just four 3-point baskets in 15 attempts, and the Mustangs held the Golden Eagles to 38.2 percent from the floor, 26-of-68. SMU shot 49.2 percent from floor, 30-of-61, and 58.3 percent from behind the arc, 7-of-12.

Very nice! 3-0 in C-USA games with wins at Tulane (weren't they supposed to win CUSA this year?) and at Southern Miss?

Hell of a start. Keep it up.

At 3-0 the ladies are alone in first place, and should hold that spot for a while, being the favorites in their next 3 games. The winner of UTEP/UAB can move into a tie when SMU has an open date next week.
