I like this team both now and in the future

Postby SMU 86 » Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:04 am

They are still improving and still might get to 17 wins. With some players playing out of position and having a short bench it is tough but they are hanging with some good teams. As for next year with the 3 transfers and the 3 (maybe 4 or 5) freshmen coming in it will be exciting. I know DePaul and Northwestern are not happy that Coach Brown and staff pulled Sterling Brown and Ben Moore out from under them. It is also nice to have the number one JC player in the country in Yanick Moreira coming to SMU next year.

Beat UTEP.

After years of being beat down, I had actually forgotten how much fun Moody is with a competitive team.

The team appears to work hard and play hard. Effort isn't an issue. They also appear calm. They don't get rattled or start to panic what little I have seen. Sloppy spurts of play have been killer and the lake of consistent outside shooting hurts.

Saw you and MustangBill and Bus at one point last night when they showed the stands.

I like this group of starters, but coach has a challenge to instill that "winner's confidence" in them. I don't see guys hungry for the ball at crunch time. Not sure whether this is carry over from the Doherty regime or what, but have to get past that "fear of failure" and instill the "I just think about winning" attitude. Then, talent willing, the guys will start making those plays at crunch time.

Looks to me like Manuel, Jones and Cunningham are much improved from last year and I like what I saw from Shawn last night. Russell has been a welcome addition and with all these guys potentially back next year along with more talent and depth coming in, I really like our future.

The fact that SMU has had a chance to win almost every game with 7 players is a credit to LB and the players buying into his system. I can't wait until LB's recruits start playing next year. That group and some of the guys from this years team, it will be a lot of fun in the coming years.

I like the pace that we play, but we're no more competitive this year than the last few. We just play a more enjoyable brand of ball. That said, we should be pretty darn good next year. Certainly not a team most want to play. Lets not forget, not only do we get the 3 transfers and a 4 or 5 man '13 class, but Blaise is red-shirting.

I don't think this years team lacks a "winners mentality, or are "afraid of failure." I think it has more to do with lack of depth, no bench, and the starting 5 playing upwards of 36 to 39 minutes a game. If 2 of the 4 players sitting out (Nic, Crandall, Blaise, or Marcus) were playing. I could see SMU with wins over USM, Tulsa, Houston, Wagner, Wyoming and Utah(part 2). Only games I see that would still be loses would be Rhode Island & UALR.

That couldn't have been pretty. Thanks to RGV Pony. Great seats and great group in your area. Had a great time except for the results.

I had the opportunity to talk to Coach Mason. Wonderful gentleman and had a wonderful attitude about this SMU team coming up (especially the LBs) and his missed opportunity with Nevada. He is a class act to be sure and I am thankful we have him.

I like this team and they show vast improvement from last year. The fact that they have lost the last 2 winnable games shows they are well coached and compeitive which is far more than could be said at this time last season. Yes, they have miles to go to run LB's offense and stay in their spacing, run their lanes, find the right options....etc., but slowly they are catching on a little bit more each game. Obviously, the bench is not very productive and not ready which complicates matters even more. The good news is that the right pieces are already in class at SMU and the reinforcements have been signed with hope for one more. This year may not meet everyone's expectations, but it is surely on track to remedy the dismal plight of the past 7 years.

Are we more fun to watch? Absolutely. Are we playing teams any closer than we have over the last 3, not really. The number of close losses in Dohs last 2.5 seasons were numerous, if not every damn night. I feel like that's all I ever watched, cause we sure didnt get blown out all that much. Last season we were about the same heading into conference, where we tanked. Hopefully we don't tank this year in quite the same way.

Future is golden, no complaints there
