Senior Bowl Week - Margus Hunt

He will get drafted in the first 2 rounds by a team needing a 3-4 DE. That is the position he's best suited for.

I've always thought his height might be a real impediment at DE but an asset at OT in the NFL. I'd hate not to take advantage of his speed but that athleticism at OT could be amazing. May not have the frame (esp lower body, hips, etc) to play OT. 6"8" worries me in the pros at DE

I agree with this line of thought. He is the size of a Pace or Ogden if he puts on another 25lbs or so. I believe he could/would have a longer career as an OT.

Lets take a guy who is just learning the nuances of his position four years in and change his position.

That sounds like a great idea. Five years and 60 lbs later he can be an ot for two years

I met Ogden in 1995. At that time he was "only" around 315-320.

True but there are a lot more 6'8+ OTs than DEs. Just thinking it might give him a better shot - of course he would have to learn a new position.

If there are a lot more 6'8" OTs coming around, then Margus should have an easier time getting his pads underneath them.

No doubt...the guy is a beast. When I met Ogden back in college he had basically no "gut" - never been next to a human that large with relatively little body fat.

For a player with such natural athleticism, he looked robotic and mechanical most of the time and struggled to defeat blocks. He played upright and high and struggled to disengage from blocks, which led to him being unproductive much of the week. For a player many expected to dominate this week to secure a spot in the first round, Hunt’s performance this week raises real questions as to whether he deserves to be drafted before the third or fourth round.

Yes, I am seeing more news about disappointed scouts. Certainly doesn't sound like high rounds now.

This sounds like exactly who Hunt was at SMU

Two things,

1. IIRC earlier everyone was basically saying he was going to go high because of his potential...not because of his current level of ability since he has only been playing the game for 4 years now.

2. Let's wait and see how he plays in the game. You have to admit that in the Hawaii Bowl he played lights out compared to what we were use to seeing. Perhaps he plays better than he practices...or not.

Playing against fresno is a lot different than playing against the best tackles in college football.

- Don't forget that Hunt got injured in the Baylor game, and spent a lot of the season hurt. He didn't stop trying to block kicks because he felt great. I think he played better in the bowl game because he got healthier.

- We have no idea if they are running a 3-4 or a 4-3 in the bowl game. I would guess a 4-3, and he has never played in a four man front. He has been taught the last 4 years to occupy blockers, and if he is playing as a 4-3 end, he is suddenly being asked to rush the QB and use his agility. That could have a massive impact on how he is doing in practice.

His potential and his attitude are going to get him drafted in the first two rounds regardless of how he does at the senior bowl.
