Yes he was -- and a damn good signing.
That guy should be a coach. Whatever he had in him that made him endure the beating he did, and keep coming back for more every Saturday, that's something I'd want my kids to learn. Mike Romo is a truly inspirational guy.

Actually OP is the biggest expert. The "most winningest" of all time. It's time for you young whippersnappers to bow down in homage to the old guys like Mrydel, OP and the rest of the seasoned fans. Seasoned can be used interchngeably with senile in OP's case. After due consideration, I believe the older I get, the better I was in all things.

One of my favorite old pick up lines was that I was 5th place in the Heisman balloting in 1971. Back then (pre Al Gore's internet) that was pretty much an unverifiable fact. Now it does not work so well. Of course my wife limits my use of pick up lines even more.
I think that what the younger crowd needs to realize and maybe we olders also, is that it is not as much pre and post DP as it is pre and post BCS. Recruiting against the BCS in many of the cases is a severe uphill struggle. That is why I like what Bennett is doing with what he has. Now it is true that for many post DP years we did not recruit on an equal basis and it is just now beginning to catch up a little, but regardless, even if the field were even, the BCS draws the kids stronger than do we. We have to sell local, Dallas, education, etc. We can not compete with National championship and exposure as the system stacks up right now. The kids from the 80s teams and even before were from a differnet level that we get now for the most part ON THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL!!!!! Now does that mean that we can not get one or two of the big boys, of course not. And does it mean that one or two of them will not mature into a great All American. Of course not. But the difference between BCS and 2nd tier is a wide chasm that is difficult to overcome. The key to complete head to head with the old SWC and the current BCS boys will be in the offensive and defensive lines. When we can establish superiority up front we will attract the skill players to finish off the rest. I truely feel this is what Bennett is doing and is even picking up some good (maybe not great) but good skill players along the way. I am satisfied although not happy with the progress so far. This will be a year in which I would like to see some good solid improvement. How is that for being bored on a Saturday afternoon.

You just stated the bottom 70 or so's case in court against the top 50 or 60 that have hijacked NCAA Div. 1A., and effectively split it into 2 divisions.
That top 50 or 60 includes a lot of schools like Vanderbilt, or Baylor who happened to be in the right place, at the right time. They are like us, and have little chance of competing with the REAL top 40 or so.

As I recall, Mike Singletary (BU) was the shortest "6FT" All-Pro LB in the NFL, and he did okay in the SWC. What's height got to do with it back in those days?

In the last two years Miami of Ohio. Louisville, and Utah all showed they could compete with the Big Boys, so did Fresno State (it just had trouble in the WAC). A small school can do it with the right mix of players, the right coach, and the right desire.

what about Bill Kielley (sp?) - played with a broken leg for 1/4 of the Baylor came, came back at the end of the season...
Ok, he wasn't greatness, but he did play with heart
