Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
So, I rank the players based on each recruiting service. You can earn up to 1 point for rivals, up to 1 on ESPN, up to 1 on scout, and up to 1 based on offers. Top rating is a 4, 3 is good recruit, 2 is decent. 1 or below is a DIR (Diamond In Rough). When I rank them numerically within their position, I still have the players that graduated in the positions, for comparison.
Here is a position by position breakdown of the class:
CB:
- Lancaster ties with Hubert and Acker as our third best CB recruit (behind JR and Law) with a 2.
- Washington and Halverson tie for 9th best CB, only ahead of Gray, with a 0.5.
DE:
- Minor is our best DE with a 4.
- Lawler ties Holloway at 6th with a .5.
- Hollie is tied with Spencer at 8th with a .25.
DT: None
LB:
- Carroll is our 7th best LB recruit, tied with Pope at 1.25.
- Horton is our 12th best LB recruit with a 0.25.
OL:
- Fister and McCarty are tied for 9th at 1.25 with Walling, Collins, and Miller.
- Seana is last because the services don't have anything on him.
QB:
- Cassell is the 4th best QB
RB:
- Shead is our best RB.
S:
- Dickerson is our 4th best recruit at 1.75, behind Scott and ahead of fellow freshman Richardson who at 1.5 is tied with Greenbauer.
- Crosby is 8th at 0.25
- Montgomery is 9th at 0 with Ryan Smith.
TE:
- Gaines is our only one, but is a good recruit as a 4.
WR:
- Rhodes and Taylor are tied at 8 (1.25) with JJ.
- Deion Jr is 14th.
So, really we only have 5 recruits that compete with our last few classes. A significant dropoff in accolades from the recruiting services, and it really is across the board from Rivals to ESPN. A significant dip in offers as well.
It will be interesting to see what the coaches say tonight, because I don't think anyone would be able to claim that this is an all-star recruiting class.... I have said before that our staff is really good at evaluating talent, so I trust them on their judgements calls for the most part. But this class certainly doesn't compare with the last 3.

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
I think you're right but you should consider there are 75 less 3+ stars this year last time I looked on Rivals

Impressive effort to substantiate what we already know and that is - this class stinks. Hope one of you cheerleaders will report back on how our hc tried to spin his way out of a complete disaster at the recruiting celebration (er...funeral).

Now that Orsini isn't here, maybe "top 25 in everything we do" isn't the goal anymore..............

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
June almost signed as many 3 stars as Dennis Franchione at Texas State* In think they are tied over 2 year period
* I make no representation about the qualification status of their Class but should it really matter with the difference in Coaching Salary, Facilities, Tradition, Location, Conference

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
Rivals threw last year's greyshirt Ty Law back into the 2013 Class so we are back even with Texas St with 8 three stars each. In the past Rivals had a policy of not counting greyshirts twice in 2 different years

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
I know these rankings mean something.....but it's not as much as some of you would think.
Ask yourself this question: how many stars did Margus Hunt have coming out of high school?
This is not to excuse a sub-par recruiting class..it's just to say that we shouldn't jump off a bridge over it...yet.

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
You have a few diamonds in the rough that turn out to be good like Margus but how many more did not. That is when you have decent starters but a lack of depth on the team.

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
At least we are getting some size. Most of them are above 6'. I don't mind seeing DBs at 6'3" at all, so hopefully they can coach them up. Like you guys, I'm not overwhelmed, but at least I'd rather be underwhelmed by guys with size, vs. underwhelmed by a group of tiny mites.

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
I keep forgetting-Is it 6 or 7 straight National Championships that SEC Division of the NFL has won now. SEC dominates recruiting. SEC dominates NCAA, SEC dominates Undergraduate Draf t(which actually makes other conferences appear closer than they really are), SEC dominates the NFL. The few schools that have broken through dominance like USC, UT, OU Florida, and Miami all did it by dominating recruiting. Next question.

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
Rivals puts SMU signing count at 21+1 for walkon this will allow signing 3 late signings before april deadline. Some larger schools are over on commitmented might be able to pick up 2 or three decent players .

Re: Official SIGNING DAY Thread
We are at 24. Don't count on the 2 or 3 decent players because just about everyone has signed. No over commitments.
