6'2 185. He was a big running back during his day and sounds like he was quite the athlete and also quite the gentlemen.
Rest in Peace, Mustang.

I met Greogory in the dorm one night his freshman year when he stood at the door of his room soliciting help with his Algerbra class from passers by. He seemed a nice guy, and of course was a mainstay on those great Abilene teams. My memory is that he, and HB Frank Jackson from Paris who sometimes played QB, and scatback Billy Polk from Whitewright were all in the same class.

IMO those three were the best group of RBs ever in the same class at SMU before the Pony Express. Seems like I read once - maybe a Blackie Sherrod column in the Times Herald - that Gregory, Jackson and Polk were all at Abilene High at one point, before two of them moved away. That would have been a sho-nuff impressive HS backfield if they had all stayed in Abilene!

So far as Abilene High glory years under coach Chuck Moser are concerned the link takes you to a good article.

Four Abilen RBs from that period played for colleges today classified as Division 1 - A: Millerman (Baylor), Gregory and also Welch (SMU), and Carpenter (OU).

I was there and seem to recall some sort of stink over SMU hiring his dad or getting him a job so that Glenn could attend SMU. I could be wrong about that tho.
Long live Inez Perez!

No Quarter...as a guy who appreciates the past would be fun to hear about players from the past and stories of their on and off the field funny occurrences which could be shared publicly.

One footnote to the story about Abilene's three 4A state champion teams happened at the start. In 1954 Abilene opened the season and beat what Chuck Moser later called a "good HP team" that visited by 40 - 0. Then they lost a non district game to much smaller Breckinrdge which went on to win the 3A championship that season. Breckinridge actually had a 2A enrollment and only twenty-two players on their "A" team that season. according to a friend of mine who later met one of the players from that team.

There were stories that Breckinridge recruited players, that "move-ins" who were given jobs so their sons could play ball there greatly helped the football program until the UIL changed the rules.

Some might dispute the allegations of recruiting by Breckinridge HS, but no one would question that for a small school they sent a lot of good players to college programs,

If you are new to this message board and want good stories about SMU football and Texas football history use the search function for posts by "Rayburn" who I believe played for SMU and coached in Texas highschools. "Arkpony" is another. SFAIK he was living on campus when Greogory came in and surely saw / heard a lot of interesting things whereas I lived at home. That's not to mention other former players like " ponyte " and "myrdell" and Stallion who worked in the SID office and has followed SMU recruiting and football closely.

I remember when Glenn signed with SMU. I was 10 yrs old and can still hear my Dad and Grandfather being so excited. It was as big a deal in the media as when we signed Eric and Craig. He had attended every home football game until his cancer hit and a Mustang till the end. Rest in Peace Glenn!
