BE pursing BB only media deal, plus one for FB

Big East nearing basketball-only TV contract with CBS and a combined football-basketball package with NBC

NY Daily News:

Conference commissioner Mike Aresco is negotiating shorter contract lengths, telling The Sports Business Journal that he knows the league has 'to prove (itself) on the field. We can't argue that we're the Big East of the past. We have to accept that and move on.'

So could we be getting more than the paltry $2m that we originally thought? Was that figure just for football?

Also, I'm sorry, but if we're not on espn we are effed. They run college football, like it or not. Whether its a Thursday night game or an afternoon game on espn2, we need to have a presence on ESPN

Aresco Wants Exposure For Big East, And NBC Might Be Best Deal

"NBC will show Big East football and basketball games on both its primary network and its new cable network, NBC Sports Network. CBS, the conference's second-tier media partner for basketball, is expected to extend its contract with a deal worth $2 million to $3 million a year"

Looks like multiple media deals, which may include some for ESPN too.

Please, it was a plot line from "Dave." Anyway, you're rushing to judgement re:the missing of ESPN presence in the tv deal.

Love Cain, but a smarter politician would scrap the current income tax scheme and get us a consumption tax and be done with it.

If ESPN landed the package Sun Beast games would be relegated to Monday afternoons sandwiched between The Tim Tebow hour and What Be the Athletes Tweeting Today. It would serve no purpose to them other than to literally control 95% of college football programing and serve as advertising for "real" college football games later that week. No thanks. At least w/ another network, theoretically, there would be competitive time slots and good exposure.

Thurs night ESPN2, ESPNU on Saturdays, hell do Saturday nights ESPNU with a 9pm kickoff for all I care. 3/4 of sports fans in America couldn't tell you where the NBC Sports Network is on their cable lineup.

The channel for NBC Sports Network moved to just under the ESPN channels on my DirectTV guide. I realize not everyone has DirecTV, but that's probably an indication NBC is using its considerable weight to raise the profile of NBC Sports Network on cable and satellite systems. In contrast, the CBS Sports Network channel is still embedded with all the funky sports channels and regional networks in the 600s on DirecTV.

I think it also indicates NBC/Universal's plans to make the NBC Sports Network more of a factor in general. There's been industry talk of NBC Sports Network eventually becoming a true competitor with ESPN. The new Fox Sports 1 is also being groomed to eventually take on ESPN. In the future, the boys in Bristol may not enjoy the status they have now.

If the NBC deal includes over-the-air broadcasts on the big NBC network, in a lot of ways that trumps having an ESPN presence. Even in this era of ESPN dominance and satellite/cable prevalence, you can reach a lot more people with an over-the-air broadcast. It's also a lot easier to find over-the-air games in sports bars, airport lounges, etc.

What you say is true, but there's still a lot of ifs involved. And ESPN is the firmly entrenched 800 pound gorilla in the room
