I'd sure rather ditch the A&M game than the Baylor game.
If it were up to me (and why isn't it?), I'd like to see a non-conference schedule that includes TCU, Rice, Tulsa and a Sam Houston State/Stephen F Austin/Northwestern State-type of school.

"What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"

Re: I Want A Piece 'O Baylor
we don't need to be scheduling FCS schools; keep playing TCU and at least one more of our former SWC mates; then add in one game with a "local" like UNT, Rice, Tulsa, Ark State, La Tech , etc... (instead on some FCS school) but then add another "name brand" from the Big 10 or SEC or ACC. That's what I'd like to see.

SMU's attendance in 2012 in the 5th year of the June Jones' miracle would have been 17,500 playing that schedule and in years we played in Ft. Worth would be 15,000. Welcome to irrelevancy

Outside of the TCU game, you might get 15K in attendance to see those other schools..........

I'd prefer something like TCU, Kansas, Colorado, and North Texas. Two of those are close to home, while not being overbearing competition, and three of those four are from major conferences, each, being beatable (not sayign we would win each of them, but are better matchups). If we were to compete well with those, or beat them, then I think it would be a good building step for getting more attention from recruits.

Re: I Want A Piece 'O Baylor
I'd love to see a study done by networks detailing how much value conferences [deleted] down their leg by playing these creampuffs. You got Big 10/MAC week in September, the SEC teams had 8 games with Sun Belt teams or lower in a single week around Thanksgiving. The Big 12 teams do the same thing and their September inventory is awful. SMU drops a likely compelling Baylor game to play SkyBlueU. There are usually 2 weeks in September when nobody plays anybody. How much television money is wasted by playing these games?
ESPN would likely televise SMU/Baylor but instead will pick up some other crappy games while SMU is relegated to the Ticket where 123 fans are tuning in. SMU loses 1 of 2 interesting out of conference games which the Big East would have had in its inventory because the Home Team controls TV rights-not the visitor.
Now what if all 12 teams do the same diluting the Big East inventory and wasting a chance to spotlight a Big East v. BCS matchup. Maybe that is why the Big 10- which televises all its games- now has agreed to stop scheduling FCS games and perhaps go to a 10 games Conference schedule. In the long run a conference full of teams scheduling FCS schools is diluting its own inventory because nobody wants to watch that crap. Schools like SMU dilute their own inventory value and then [deleted] they aren't getting any money from the networks. Maybe the MWC has it right-we'll pay extra for teams playing games that we can televise and people will care about
Oh and remember if the 10 game Conference formula works for the Big 10 you may have seen the last SMU v. BCS game in Ford Stadium because all BCS teams will play 2 out of conference home games so they will have at least 7 home games. That will make all our Division 1AA fans very happy. You can ask your Granpappy what it was like the year SMU played Ohio St. Penn. St, Florida, A&M, Arkansas, Texas, Texas Tech , nationally ranked Houston and traditional rivals Baylor and TCU in one year and turned the entire perception of the program around by playing competitively

Re: I Want A Piece 'O Baylor
There's a very good reason that networks are offering up more dough to conferences that play a 9-game conference schedule. Also why Jim Delany has the B1G exploring a 10-game conference schedule. Adds to strength of schedule, further separates the power conferences from everyone else. A&M is fighting the loss of your game for two reasons: 1) They played two I-AA teams last year and caught hell for it. 2) SEC will soon be negotiating a new mega TV deal and they want those ratings as high as is humanly possible. Better for A&M to be playing a highly beatable FBS team than an FCS team while tuning up for conference play.
I'll bet within 3 years you see all of the big boys playing 10 conference games.

Our schedule was brutal this year, but money wise it just doesn't make since to give up a game of great interest to our fans and area fans like a Baylor game at Home and replace it with Montana St.

I wonder if they've thought this through as far as how it will affect bowl eligibility. The way the big conferences get 9 bowl eligible teams is by having everyone get 3-4 nonconference wins.

Only way it makes sense is if the following adds up to more than the 15-16k additional fans (10-12 BU visiting, 3-6k SMU & non-partisan spike) worth of attendance revenue from concessions, tickets, etc and the buyout cost.
SMU has 6 home games. If going 0-4 (theoretically) could have meant enough fewer attending for your final few home games that would offset the prior amount.

Are we a revenue vehicle or a sports team?

LOL. But clearly we all see which is the important thing to be. At least "Mustangs" translates well to the [revenue] vehicle world!
