Rhonda Rompola Collects Career Win No. 400
Mustangs Defeat Tulsa 69-60 For 20th Win Of The Season

Feb. 21, 2013

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola earned her 400th win with a 69-60 victory over Tulsa in Moody Coliseum Thursday night, more than any other head coach of any sport on the Hilltop. Rompola, who is the single season record holder at SMU with 683 during the 1981-82 season, has led the Mustangs to nine 20-win seasons during her 22-year career at the helm of the SMU women's basketball program as the Mustangs improved to 20-5, 11-1 in Conference USA.

Keena Mays and Alisha Filmore made sure the long-time coach accomplished the milestone in her first attempt, combining for 16 field goals in 33 attempts, including seven 3-pointers. Mays scored 29 points, going 5-for-7 from behind the arc, eclipsing 20 points for the ninth time in 17 games. Filmore scored 16 points to get within eight points of becoming the 20th 1,000-point scorer in program history.

With the score tied 51-51 with just over eight minutes left in the game, Mays scored 11 points in an SMU 14-3 run, starting the spree with back-to-back 3's. The run gave SMU a 65-54 lead with less than five minutes left, and the defense held Tulsa (11-14, 6-6 C-USA) to just two more points from the field the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs shot just 38.6 percent from the floor, 27-of-70, but made eight of 21 attempts from behind the arc, 38.1 percent. The Golden Hurricane shot 46.2 percent, 24-of-52, but made just three of 10 from 3-point range. SMU committed only 10 turnovers, while scoring 23 points on 21 Tulsa turnovers.

SMU plays Houston on the road Sunday at 2 p.m. The Mustangs, who are in first place by three games in Conference USA, return to Moody Coliseum on Thursday to host Tulane at 7 p.m. For tickets to one of the last two women's basketball game in Moody before the renovation, call 214-SMU-GAME or visit SMUMustangs.com.

Congrats to Rhonda for her 400th and to her and the team for having a great season.

Go Mustangs!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
