Moody/Mustangs - Circa 1956

Postby Digetydog » Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:06 am

During the halftime radio show, they interviewed someone about the opening up of Moody. Listening him speak about those times, I realized that the Mustangs were a national power back then. We were SWC champs from 55-58 (thanks Jim Krebs), played in the final four, and went to the NCAA Tourney 3 years in a row.

In 1956 dollars, $2.5m was an enormous sum to spend on a basketball arena. By comparison, the Longhorns were playing in the Gregory Gym until 1997. The Gregory Gym lacked A/C and seated only 4,000.

SMU Coliseum with the concrete seating area on the east end. The Moodys bailed us out and paid off the mortgage.

Don't forget the nice stage on the east end of Gregory Gym.
