I don't know anything about marketing but I do know that your brand is pretty damn important. The Big East name is about the only claim to legitimacy we have left, and if it changes, we're officially back down to the rungs of CUSA and the MAC, and the MWC is pretty viewed higher than us at that point.
Perception is reality, and if we change the name, we'll be perceived as bigger clowns than we already are in the wake of the mass exodus from the Big East.
Let the Catholic Seven have their tourney at MSG, but keep the name UNLESS they make us an offer we can't refuse...like someone said, $100 million.

Funny that all of this talk of selling the Big East name has heated up once the ESPN deal was re-upped...I wonder if that was part of the deal with ESPN, that the Catholic schools get the BE name

Very well said. But the ACC will implode tomorrow and we will be IN But seriously, this sucks.
Like I suggested, being part of a conference that includes Houston, BSU, BYU, Air Force, SDSU, sounds better and better every day! Let's cut our losses and go home. Academically, it is hard to defend, Memphis, ECU, and two directional Florida state schools, plus the pride of the East, UConn and Louisville.
I know its just a name but I agree this will really hurt from a perception standpoint. Why would the league agree to sell the name to the defectors???? Better be a friggin huge check to justify losing your brand/image. Now the TBD Conference will just get lumped in and confused with cusa, sun belt, etc. Think this is a terrible decision by whoever is in charge...aresco, school presidents...
unfortunately this thing just keeps getting worse by the month. Hopefully it's hit bottom b/c this is horrible. No teams remain, TV contract is terrible, Big East name is gone. What else is there?
I really hate to say this...but with everything that has happened to the Big East since we were selected to join has now changed. Finally the name change now has me seriously wondering how many people in the Big East offices are going to stay with us or go with in the Big East (Catholic Basketball Teams) since that will be the Big East now! Will we have anybody to stay and WORK for our yet to be named conference? Makes me real nervous.
We've seriously have got to dump this conference and head west. The MWC carries much more clout than any new bull**** name of a conference we come up with.
SDSU, BYU, Houston, Boise State, Air Force, Fresno. A shame we didn't accept their offer when we got it.

no telling if Aresco says adios amigos - i definitely would...
So lets hear all of those clowns that even as recently as a week ago were talking about how the Big East is still the correct choice. I have been saying for months and months that the MWC is by far the superior conference and our idiotic leadership screwed up by telling them thanks but no thanks. If we were there, we would essentially have what we thought we were getting in the BE. Winner gets BCS access and their basketball is truly on the rise, not fake on the rise like SMU athletics. So no good teams left, no money, no MSG, no conference name or recognition. So we are playing conference USA schedule in the eastern time zone. Montana state for football and garbage coming to the new moody for the first year of "new name" basketball. We need to put our tail between our legs, take off the big boy pants we tried on and steer this sinking ship out west. Without those 7 teams next year, moody will be empty. I'd rather stay in Conf USA than go east now.

Chicken Little is alive and well on the Hilltop. Go East, Go West. No, the other way!
Our current situation or options mean 'little', actually. We improve on the field and court and SMU will be in a good situation, whether that is in a reinvigorated nBE or another conference that pursues us and is worth accepting. Running from pillar to post is unseemly.
We are only accountable for what we can control. We have to earn it, not demonstrate we desparate. You can make a case for anything, based on antidotal information or opinions. One fact is either we are too eastern for MWC or too western for nBE. So, let's commit to performing on the field and the world will come to us.

Exactly... Both conferences are not ideal for us, so we need to prove ourselves first. So at that point, you have to look at which conference gives us the best chance to win in a competitive recognizable league that assures you are in the BCS most years if you win the conf ring. The east league no longer offers us money, exposure, good competition, recognizable brand name, Madison square garden or really much of anything. Before it was logical to stay East for 1-2 years but now that we aren't even going to get one year of good hoops/exposure, any upside left is gone. This is why MWC is where we need to be until we actually start winning. We need to get with MWC now, play one year of football under current rules and depart in 2014 for MWC.
