Cayleb Jones charged with assault

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas wide receiver Cayleb Jones has been charged with felony aggravated assault for allegedly hitting a Longhorns men's tennis player.
Longhorns coach Mack Brown announced that Jones has been suspended from the team until the conclusion of his legal process.
According to an Austin police affidavit, Jones is being charged with assaulting the tennis player at a downtown bar around 1:50 a.m. on Feb. 22.
A police investigation found the tennis player, sophomore Joey Swaysland, was speaking with Katherine "Khat" Bell, a Longhorns volleyball player who previously dated Jones, at the Club Aquarium at 403 East Sixth St.
"This conversation upset the suspect," according to the affidavit. "While both victim and witness were conversing, the suspect decided to punch the victim one time with a closed fist to the victim's face on his right side."
Swaysland, a native of Australia, suffered a fractured right jaw and remains sidelined with the injury.
Police say the relationship between Jones and Bell ended some time ago "on bad circumstances" and that Bell has accused Jones of having jealousy and anger issues. Swaysland told police in a sworn statement that, prior to the assault, Jones had threatened him about talking to Bell.
Following the late-night incident, Jones and Bell both went to Texas strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie, who confirmed in a sworn statement that Jones confessed hitting Swaysland, according to the police report.
A second-degree assault conviction in Texas carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Jones, a native of Austin, caught two passes and appeared in 10 games as a true freshman in 2012. Bell helped lead Texas to an NCAA title in volleyball in 2012 and led the Longhorns in blocks.

How many times recently have we heard this verbiage coming from Austin: "Longhorns coach Mack Brown announced that Jones has been suspended from the team until the conclusion of his legal process."
