There's been no SEC network prior to this because, prior to this, CBS and ESPN paid them a zillion dollars to remove any incentive to create a network. When those deals were cut the Big Ten network was struggling and no one was sure it would work.

Sounds like the SEC has seen the numbers the Big Ten Network is now generating and knows they can do better.
