New Conference Sports

Post by AusTxPony »

Which sports beyond Football and Basketball should our new conference sponsor? Which do the member and member-to-be schools sponsor?

I don't think we are gaining enough in revenue to justify adding sports.

For non-revenue sports, further strengtheing Men's and Women's Soccer would be smart. As for new sports, we lack significant new funding, but I would always encourage the conference to consider Men's and Women's Lacrosse, which is growing rapidly especially in the East and most metropolitan markets.

Do you want to drop to Division II? To be Division I you have to have have six men's sports and meet Title IX. We are barely at the minimum for D-I as it is.

Ok, wasnt aware of minimums - Ncaa should rethink this b/c nobody is sustainable other than 20 or so AD depts. i would dump swimming all together, i dont care about getting flamed by water pony. Too much wasted space and scholarships - and i have swimmer friends too..

No flame. Division III may be appealing. We get to reset the role of Athletics. Intramurals does include flag football and club sports like lacrosse can play in Ford, along with Men's and Women's Soccer. Dropping sports and all scholarships sounds like a plan to me.

Who cares if sports are profitable. Is the meadows museum net profit? Div-I athletics are are campus experience upgrade not a business.

As for the original question.

The current Big East and current C-USA pretty much sponsor the same sports with about the same percentage of participation by the schools, with the obvious exception of the Big East also having women's field hockey and men's/women's lacrosse. The other notable difference is the Big East sponsors men's swimming.

There aren't any big surprises like men's volleyball. As for the oft-mentioned baseball, SMU will be the only team in the new conference not sponsoring baseball as it is today. There will be four schools without softball.

Nine of the 11 teams will have men's soccer, and 10 of the 11 teams will have women's soccer. (Tulane doesn't have anything!)

It will be interesting to see if some of the former C-USA schools add lacrosse/field hockey or if the former Big East schools will have to affiliate. None of the former C-USA schools have any lacrosse or field hockey teams.

I would assume an announcement about which sports will be sponsored would have to be pretty soon, considering fall sports schedules will need to be finalized in the next month or two.

Add baseball- cut anything other than fb and bball.

I also like the idea of lacrosse. Those 4 are the only sports with any kind of media attention

Adding doesn't mean cutting as well.

Just add baseball/softball and men's/women's lacrosse.

UConn and Temple each have 22 sports (24 if you count track/field twice like we do). We are really at the low end at 16 (17).
