Tuesday (3/26/13) practice report
• It’s early - very early - but in the passing drills (four quarterbacks throwing to four receivers against no defense), one receiver who made several nice catches along the sideline was freshman Nate Halverson, who seems adept at reaching out to snatch the ball while maintaining focus on where his feet are along the sideline.
• Early catch of the day: Deion Sanders ran a short stop route, turning back to the passer maybe seven or eight yards from the line of scrimmage. The pass was thrown hard and a little behind him, and Sanders lunged to his left and snared it with one hand.
• Another early entry for Catch of the Day turned in by Jeremy Johnson, who just raced straight down the hash marks, looked back straight over his head and stretched forward for a fingertip catch, a la Willie Mays. (If you have to ask what that means, Google it.)
• It’s safe to say QB Austin Kent, all 6-6 of him, isn’t likely to leapfrog all of the other passers on the roster and play, but what can safely be said is he won’t have many - if any - passes knocked down at the line of scrimmage. Kent seems to have a fairly quick, compact release for a guy his size and a very high release point. He shouldn’t have a problem getting his passes downfield unless June Jones brings Cannen Cunningham over from the basketball team to rush the passer in practice.
• Roaming the sideline during practice: a handful of recruits, one of whom is a defensive end from Estonia who looks like he stands about 6-8 and weighs around 280 pounds. Not sure who he is …
• Seaver Myers has worked at both tackle spots in the first two days.
• That WR experiment Kenneth Acker drew first-day praise from head coach June Jones is no surprise, as the senior-to-be is one of the best athletes on the team and has shown exceptional hands and speed in his first three years. In passing drills Tuesday, he showed the ability to adjust to the ball in flight and made several nice catches, including on short screen passes and on deeper throws down the sideline (on one especially nice grab, he looked up over his left shoulder, realized the ball was fading toward the sideline, twisted around and snatched the ball - with his feet in bounds - about a foot off the ground). The deeper passes are more like what he’s used to seeing when he shadows receivers downfield, but he hasn’t seen the shorter throws since high school, when he played all over the field for Grant High School in Portland, Ore.
• Jared Williams taking his turn in the RB rotation, and looks smooth in his acceleration and change-of-direction.

Yes, it's only two days in, and nobody is hitting anyone, but the receivers have looked good so far. For the most part, they're making the routine catches and some when the have to reach for a pass that's a little over their heads, out in front of them, etc.
