ESPN Press - SMU

Post by SMUfrat »

Has anyone else notice that SMU is getting alot more attention media wise?

I think it has to do with a few factors, but I am pretty young, so I may be ignorant.

1. ESPN, media in general has watched and commentated as conference realignment reshaped college sports. The Big East was by far the b*tch of this change - gaining us press by that fact alone.

2. Upgraded league - despite the nay-sayers, Big East / C-TBA is an upgrade worthy of more coverage.

3. ESPN deal - now we have ESPN analysts that are required to cover our league and follow us.

4. SMU is a program with promise. I have already noticed a lot of good things on SMU from the media, which is cool.

5. Coaching hires - obviously worthy of some respect.

In summary, I believe we are a well covered conference, and will continue to be. We will be somewhat underdogs - which can bring in fans. We can use this platform to further legitimize ourselves. I don't see us as 'have-nots' anymore. I think we are on the right side of the ledge, but way too close for our comfort. If we keep investing we can come out on top sooner rather than later.

I agree....

Plus I would add lately we've been making a little more noise in the NFL.

nothing wrong with a little offseason optimism

Four years of bowl appearances is finally getting some attention. It may not be BSC level bowls, but winning does attract attention. Overcoming a whole generation of pitiful losing was a huge barrier to national attention. And ESPN has had SMU bowl games for years now. That too gathers some conversation. Bottom line, winning helps.

Now we need to take it to the next level and get to top 25 level bowls.

And LB's hire was a definite plus.

And the women’s BB team this year generated attention as well.

Let’s not forget the Bush library will be a quick spotlight for SMU and will probably be shown on TV broadcast of SMU games in the future. Not bad to have a presidential library as a photo op backdrop.

We aren’t where a lot of us would like to be but we are light years ahead of where we use to be.

True. What do we have in the NFL? 9? 10?

Not many reasons to be pesimistic.

all we need to do is deliver on the field and court. The eastern media is ready to adopt us and give us some love. The future of our hoops program looks good, but we need the football program to step it up. Let's hope they surprise us all with a rebuilt line-up this year
