ESPN Insider article about it

CHICAGO -- ESPN 100 shooting guard Keith Frazier (Dallas/Kimball) committed to SMU over offers from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Texas and others on Tuesday while at the McDonald's All American Game festivities in Chicago.

"It came down to SMU and Texas Tech in the end," Frazier said. "I was ready."

Frazier, ranked the No. 48 recruit in the Class of 2013, had initially been scheduled to make his announcement last Thursday, but he delayed it because he wanted to be 100 percent sure.

"I selected SMU because I loved the coaching staff, I know the players well, it's close to home where I can be heavily involved in raising my son and my mom can see me play," he said.

Head coach Larry Brown really made a great impression on Frazier during the recruiting process and landed his biggest recruit to date at SMU as a result.

"Coach Brown was loyal and honest with me and I liked that," Frazier said of the former NBA coach.

So what are the Mustangs getting in Frazier?

At 6-foot-5, 190 pounds, Frazier is an extremely skilled shooting guard with deep range and a quick and confident trigger. He is equally effective on the break or in the halfcourt set. On the break he runs the court for 3-point spot-ups, but when he gets all the way into the lane he has the size and athletic ability to elevate and finish over smaller defenders. Frazier has the shooting skills to get hot and break open the game from behind the arc. He is also extremely athletic and can create off the dribble, and he passes much better than he gets credit for. He can even help at the point in a pinch to get the offense started.

Brown will have fun designing set plays to get Frazier open looks where he will need only a split second to make the defense pay. Frazier will be highlighted on opponents' scouting reports as a player not to help off of, which in turn will stretch the opposing defense and open up the low post.

His commitment to SMU is also important because Brown now has an elite local recruit who may cause other prospects in Dallas and throughout the state of Texas to give the Mustangs a serious look.

Frazier has proven this week that he belongs at the McDonald's All American Game with the other elite players in the Class of 2013. He has played extremely well in practice and has competed on both ends with energy and effort. He has also done what he does best -- shoot the rock. Frazier has run the floor well for deep spot-up 3s, come off screens in set plays, and created opportunities off the bounce for himself and teammates.

Frazier joins three-star small forward Sterling Brown (Chicago/Proviso East), power forward Ben Moore (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and junior college center Yanick Moreira (Levelland, Texas/South Plains College) in SMU's 2013 class that now has a great mix of size, athletic ability and scoring. There is an old basketball saying that there is always room on the team for a shooter. Well, SMU just got one of the best shooters in the country and there is plenty of room for he and the Mustangs to excel at a high level.

"We will have some great young talent and a real good junior college center," Frazier said. "We are going to be good."

On top of Frazier being a great player that will be an awesome addition to SMU Hoops, the attention and exposure we will get from this (both in Dallas and nationally) is huge.

- McDonald's All American playing on TV tomorrow night, the day after he committed
- #22 recruit in the country according to Rivals
- #30 recruit in the country per CBS 247
- #48 by ESPN
- #35 by Scout

Say what you want about rankings, but the point is that he is that people notice the guys rated that high and where they are headed. This is a huge get for us.

this is the shooter we needed. We are now ridicuously deep. We literally have 10 guys who are legit starters

Nic Moore, Keith Frazier, Shawn Williams, Cannen Cunningham, Yanick Moriera

vs.

Nick Russell, Ryan Manual, Crandall Head, Jalen Jones, Markus Kennedy

Blaise plus the 2 freshmen from Illinois in waiting. Insane for an SMU team. Wow, i am hope LB full court presses and creates a schedule that matches our team and new Moody. Use his connections to bring in UT, Kansas, North Carolina all comers, haha.

on Rivals breakdown of the East squad, this is what was said about KF....impressive.

Keith Frazier: The shooting guard from Dallas' play was one of the most pleasant surprises of the day. He was feeling it from deep and has legitimate range to the NBA 3-point line. He's bigger than we realized and likely pushing 6-foot-6. There is no question he's a five-star talent.

This post is dead on. 10 deep, full court pressure, added a shooter (our biggest need). We also have the ability to go quite big (Yanik, Kennedy, Jalen, Shawn, Russell/Frazier for example) or small/shooter ball (Cannen, Jalen, Frazier, Russell, Moore for example). I would love to bring in some more competitive teams and I think we can beat some too. Not ready to start calling the likes of Kansas and North Carolina to start talking trash, but for the first time in a while I wouldn't waive the white flag and run the other direction if they called us. ha. As for UT, we'd be favored by 4 if we had them at Moody. 8)

Coach Brown will not playing North Carolina or Kansas unless they meet in the NCAA tournment due to the fact that he does not like playing coaches that coached under him.

Relax, we will get enough of Louisville, Connecticut, Cincinnati, USF, Memphis, and Temple. :)

I would love to play more in-state teams. I think that this team will be able to play with any team in Texas, and beat most of them
