The Mythical Charles Waggoner

The main thing people forget about ED was how much weight he put on between his sophomore and junior years. I remember seeing him his freshman year and he was a twig. By his junior year he was a beast running over defensive backs. There was a huge difference freshman year.

The first time I saw him play at SMU I told my wife, he is the best of the lot! Then he was injured returning that kickoff that also knocked out Dickerson for the last game of the season against Arkansas (if my memory serves me right). Meyer ran James every play (James mother had complained that her son was not getting enough playing time) and while he gained around 150 yds against Arkansas in Little Rock that night, he was badly beaten up. I don't think she complained any more after that. Any way, unfortunately we never saw Waggoner run again.

Count me as one who saw all 3 and thought CW was the best.

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I thought CW was injured on a kick-off return against Texas Tech at Texas Stadium, not against Arkansas.

I remember it distictly because Ron Meyer had the brilliant idea to put both Dickerson and Waggoner on Kickoff Return in the Tech game at Texas Stadium. Both got hurt on the same Kickoff. Waggoner never played again-Dickerson was down for a long time too. I don't think he played in the next game either because I remember James got to run about 30 plays in the finale against Arkansas on the road

Pretty audacious for James' mother to start complaining to the coach about playing time. I feel like I'm back in little league or something. Wow!

I didn't mean to imply CW was injured in the Arkansas game. He was injured in the Tech game. I meant to say he was absent for the final game against Arkansas in Little Rock (I was there) and that's where James played the entire game.

When he got hurt, he was probably the number 1 RB.

Steve Endicott told me that Waggoner would have played ten years in the NFL, and Ron Meyer told June in my presence that Don Pettaway would have been Andre Tippett had he not drowned at Galveston.
