yeah that's 3 great kids that died before their time. Pettaway redshirted his only year though so we never got to see his potential

I went to Pete's funeral with Meyer, Steve Sidwell, and Dan Slaughter. I will never forget Meyer saying on the way to Duncanville that "only the good die young."

As a post script, I had the wonderful opportunity to play golf last month with a couple of great buddies and Eric Dickerson. The four of us talked extensively about the true talent that was Charles Waggoner and about the kickoff return against Tech on which they were both hurt.

Pettaway played on Kickoff speciality team his Fr year. I'm not sure he was redshirted. He was an incredible athlete regardless. And it was a very sad situation when he died. Several of our teammates with with him when it happened. We wore a black circle with 89 (Don's number) on the back of our helmets in '79.

Pete's death was a real blow right before the season. He could have been one of the greatest LB in SMU history to be sure.
