folks - it starts at the top -

the administration chooses not to / if they wanted to license this stuff & make $$$$ & put us 'back' on the map again, it would happen over-nite -

ever since the dp, the administration has wanted to de-emphasized sports & they've done a (*&^&** good job of it! this is just another reason how they've done it -

face it, for this & so many other reasons why are the means why we can't get into a good conference (bcs-bs stuff) along with all the wins we desperately need -

its all by design & it starts @ the top -

for all u guys that work for a company or have your own business, u guys know exactly what i'm talking about / its like pushing a rope / the company is staggering along or going down the tubes & the president does't want to know what the customers are saying or doing (& competition for that matter) -

leadership starts @ the top & smu hasn't had any in decades & probably never will & this is just another example -

de-emphasizing sports is part of the agenda & they have done a %%^%$ good job of it / so in one sense of the plan, maybe they have done a good job / nothing like losing $$$ for sure

so its no use getting in a huff b/c none of us have control or influence @ the school so its not worth burning the brain cells worrying about it

like maggie thatcher said, "concensus is the negation of leadership"

Licensed Wearables Taking Off

FROM INDIANA comes the latest success story in American fashion. No, that’s not an oxymoron.

One area of fashion in which the US actually takes the lead is in the sports / casual category. These are the stylized T-shirts, sweatshirts and warm-ups—most of them logoed with pro or college teams—that we see in the malls, schools, workplaces and on the street all across the fruited plain.

Next, Inc.—based in Wabash, Indiana—is currently on a big-time roll, and most of the company’s growth comes from licensed college apparel.

The company had $21.5 million in sales last year, up from $12.4 million just two years ago.

According to the College Licensing Company, licensed college merchandise (apparel and non-apparel) totaled $2.8 billion last year, up a healthy 10% from 2003.

All bodes well for Next:

• The company recently received a license to produce Notre Dame clothing.

• It has expanded its line to women’s and children’s clothes.

• Sales to non-traditional retail channels (example: auto dealers) have proliferated.

• It ranks 18th among all companies in licensed apparel sales. Not bad.

What’s next for Next? (Sorry, we just had to do that.)

More later . . . . .

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I sent an email to John Koerner, Associate Athletic Director for Business on Friday evening and received the following email response from him on Saturday. Here it is:

Dear Robert,

We are not closing the Spirit Shop; however after a comprehensive review of the operations, we determined it was time to make a change. This was not a quick decision, but actually took more than a year to make.

This was not an "executive decision". This was a group decision that included the Athletic Department Marketing team and other University staff members. As the point person on this task, I am comfortable answering your questions, and appreciate your considerate inquiry to the ponyfans.com notice.

The overall level of merchandise service will improve this year for:
1) Football game day sales
2) Daily sales when there are special activities scheduled, and
3) Internet sales

There will be days the Spirit Shop is closed. This is necessary because experience demonstrates there is no walk up traffic to the shop.

On the days the Spirit Shop is closed, traffic will be directed to the SMU Bookstore on Mockingbird. Unfortunately for the Spirit Shop, the SMU Bookstore already captured the "neighborhood" merchandise market with a competitive selection, a more convenient location and longer hours of operation.

However, the new Spirit Shop vendor will aggressively pursue the merchandise market. Within a few short weeks, you will have access to more SMU merchandise at lower prices than you have ever had before.

The income to the University will improve, but most importantly, more merchandise and a broader selection of product will be available to the SMU fan.

The primary factor we considered in the vendor business plan was: "How do you plan to get more people wearing SMU merchandise?" This was actually a very difficult question. However, "Advanced On-Line" presented a comprehensive business plan that surpassed their competitors.

Bob Sharp is loyal "Red and Blue". There are few people in this world more loyal than Bob Sharp. However the new company "Advanced Online" is also connected to SMU. One of the partners, David Dykhuizen an SMU graduate and football player from 1981.

After reviewing each business plan for the near future and beyond, it was determined that we should make a change. I worry that good fans like yourself will not give this new vendor a chance. However, they are determined to earn your business with hard work and a product that you will be pleased with.

Thank you for your support and thank you for your letter. I hope that I have answered your questions.

Sincerely,

John Koerner
Associate Athletic Director for Business

Obviously, what we gots now is not working... change it... make it better... let somebody who knows how do it. If you need a mustang souvenir fix, the SMU Bookstore has good stuff and it's close-by. At least we know that it has specific operating hours. Showing up to shop at The Spirit Shop is a crapshoot.

Kudos to Mr. Koerner for a straight-forward and thorough to MM65's e-mail.

Looks like "Corso" knows something ("I expect this decision is driven by the lack of traffic going through the Spirit Shop during the week") after all!

Do you remember what the Spirit Shop was like before Bob took it over? A big bundle of nothin'. Bob has kept it going pretty dog-gone well considering the the wins & losses. When your team loses all the time, "If you're open, or if you stock it, they will come" doesn't always come so easily. Bob has always projected the philosophy that the glass is half-full during the lowest football & basketball years. He's had such a good rapport with players, their parents, coaches & fans. Always the attitude that things will get better, and conveying such at the Shop. As for me, I'm afraid one of my "flaws" is that I'm a bit more cynical.

Yeah, the guy was right. I won't have quite the urge to buy SMU stuff any more.

Sounds like the deal is done, but I am surprised that Bob has not made any comments on this site about the matter. Perhaps his business is heading in another direction, like the restaurant biz (mentioned earlier).

All in all, it is too bad that the store will have limited hours. Being located next to all of the sports history is a natural marketing tool-- much more than walking thru "Barnes & Nobles".

I know I've not bought anything on game day at the Shop-- my purchases were 'spur of the moment' when visiting my kid on campus or ebing in the neighborhood during an occasional practice.
