SMU Lost to UAB...

Post by BigT3x »

...in a fan support poll on the college football subreddit.

http://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/1b ... ournament/

I know Reddit is a young people's site but surely there must be a few redditors on Ponyfans. Take part in r/cfb, there's only about three or four of us SMU fans on there.

Help me in my crusade to stop them from calling us "Southern Methodist" and relentlessly using the phoney pony.

Fan of "Southern Methodist" - not a fan of the phony pony. There is a phony pony banner hanging on the practice field fence on Bishop. "Welcome Future Mustangs" - Blue sign, white lettering, red phony.

Same here - another fan of "Southern Methodist".
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Me three!

Although I do understand how using SMU consistently is probably better branding, etc. nationally - especially for athletics.

I'm more concerned about losing to UAB than the name thing.

SMU much better than Southern Methodist IMO. For one, we are not affiliated with the methodist church, which is confusing to outsiders. Similarly, tcu does not embrace the texas christian name.

Actually SMU is affiliated with the Methodist church.

"The Board of Trustees is composed of 42 members, including 3 bishops and 9 other trustees recommended by the South Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church; 26 trustees recommended by the Board; and 4 ex officio members (the President of the University and one representative each of the Students' Association, the Faculty Senate, and the Alumni Board)."
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I was told when I was on campus that there was no longer an "official" affiliation with the methodist church, although I guess that is a matter of what "official" means, since there are clearly members of the church on the board. Thanks for pointing this out

SMU is also owned by the South Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church.

I think the usual confusion is because SMU is committed to being non-sectarian in its teaching.

I'm in fly-over country. Southern Methodist gets me more recognition than SMU. I prefer Southern Methodist if for no other reason than it saves a good minute explanation of what SMU is. I think if you're in Texas it's SMU, out of Texas ............ not so much.
