I was hoping someone would point this out, not that bad wording of the thread title takes away from a good discussion.

Farrow and Jackson were given a lot of reps and rushed for a combined 800 yards when Sims was out with an injury. We'll be fine. QB, RB and WR are our three deepest positions on the entire roster.

718 yards. That's how many CK is rounding up to 800. He used to call it 900. This guy over sells everything and therefore cannot be taken seriously.

6-6 (with this schedule) likely gets JJ an extension

Montana State (W) - FCS
at Texas A&M (L) - away game, SEC level talent
at TCU (L) - might be closer than some think, and I think this is our best chance to get 2nd OOC W
vs. Rutgers (Family Weekend) (L) - BCS talent
at Memphis (W) - team is better than last year, but we should win this away game
Temple (Homecoming) (W) - new coach, new QB, MAC level recruiting
at Cincinnati (L) - BCS talent, away game, hostile stadium
vs. Connecticut (W) - I don't count UCONN as BCS-level talent. Maybe I'm naive here.
at USF (L) - BCS talent, away game, hostile
at Houston (W) - Piland & Levine = SMU W. But this may be the game that gets us bowl eligible, so who knows
vs. UCF (W)

I think SMU can win the Rutgers and USF games to get to 8-4, but that's without a surprise loss or two. Hope for 8-4 but 7-5/6-6 is likely. Hard to imagine how a below .500 season won't be a major disappointment.

If you're expecting a rational conversation with CougarKing, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

StallionsModelT wrote:Also, how can you possibly count QB as one of the deepest positions on the team when the QB play was so putrid for UH last season? Are there talented guys on campus down there? Yes. It has to be proven on the field. Fact of the matter is that despite a very solid group of receivers, Houston is facing major issues at QB and RB. I do think they'll be okay on the offensive line.

Houston will be better than last year but I'm nowhere near sold on Levine as a gameday coach. We will see how it works out but we saw a very uneven Houston team last year. Maybe the second year of the Levine era will be better.

Putrid QB play is why we brought in Ward (who SMU just so happened to offer as well), Cosh and O'Korn. Jones has graduated and Kohlhausen isn't even on the 3 deep. (Both of them plus Piland played against SMU last year). So if Pilad can keep all three of them off his heels then fine. If not, then most likely Cosh will be our starter come opening day while O'Korn redshirts. Fall Camp should answer our question at qb though.

CougarKing,

A lot of "what ifs" and "maybes" in your contention that QB is a position of strength. The fact is that the KNOWN COMMODITY (Piland) wasn't good last season. As I stated previously, there are some talented kids on campus, but that means nothing until they prove they can do it on the field.

You can rationalize losing Sims any way that you want but its a serious blow to the Houston offense.

The losses on an already shaky defense are troubling as well.

I'm not a Houston hater so I do believe there will be improvement on the field next season for the Cougars. That said, I don't know why you insist on coming to an SMU message board and talk really low-level smack.

Most likely upsets are TTech and Rutgers. We're so much better at home than on the road. I think you got it right the rest of the way. Best record 8 - 4.

Until recently, I've always have had a good discussion with the folks on PF until you guys finally beat us for the first time in almost a decade. Now, many are trying to derail threads and whatnot. I could bring out the big guns (high and medium level smack) but I want to refrain from doing so due to past experience of liking this place.

Please no. I know that with the schedule 6-6 is a job well done, but it's time for both parties to move on.

My dad asked an employee in the Athletic Department earlier this year about JJ and his future at SMU. The employee smiled and said something along the lines of JJ is gone after his contract is up.

Obviously, I appreciate everything JJ has done to bring SMU back from obscurity, but aside from the two Hawaii bowls, we have yet to win a big game against a marquee opponent, nor play consistently great football.

PROVE the doubters wrong this year JJ.

Gilbert was atrocious for the first half of the season. The last four or five games he was very good especially once he figured out he could run a little bit.
