I think this is the #1 problem with the state of smu football.mustangxc wrote:I think years 2 and 3 were amazing and year 4 was going great up until we played at home agains UCF which is when JJ kind of checked out.SMU2007 wrote:Your expectation was to make a bowl after 5 years? So far he has met my expectations of reaching a bowl at some point by the end of his 5th season here. That said, I do not expect a BCS bowl bid and am disappointed that we are not trending upwards, and have flatlined instead. Hopefully the new coaches can help us get back to our climb. Wasn't the name of the show the first year or so "The Climb"? We need to get back on track.

Not a coincidence that we were, what, 4-1? 5-1? Then the UCF game came right after we got our Big East invitation, and the crowd sucked. June got pouty, and then "coincidentally" that player-penned op-ed chewing out the crowd came out something like a day later. That was kind of a definitive turning point in the June tenure.

We never have given him the fan support he deserves. That's tough on anyone, player or coach. He pulled off a miracle and we seemed not to notice, to have another gin and tonic and muster up a golf clap or two.

You hard core June Jones supporters tickle me. The talking point are all the same weak stuff.

So you're saying we're a rabidly supportive fan base then? Nary a golf clap or gin and tonic to be seen

I am saying you all have the same lane talking points. By the way, why hasn't June's contract been extended if he is so great?

If the talking point is lame, then address it directly. It should be easy to disprove and we'll all be done with it.
For the record, I think JJ is rightly done here. I don't see him taking us much further, but would gladly be proven wrong this season.

The weakness of the arguments goes both ways. The June haters are as ridiculous as the June lovers.

I'd say he's getting the fan support he deserves given his output. If he wants more then he should do more.

Gin and tonics have never stopped me from standing and yelling...so layoff trying to give gin and tonics a bad name.ponyboy wrote:So you're saying we're a rabidly supportive fan base then? Nary a golf clap or gin and tonic to be seen

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

And that right there is why no-one should ever want to coach here.sbsmith wrote:ponyboy wrote:We never have given him the fan support he deserves. That's tough on anyone, player or coach. You go to the games to support the kids. And to support the university. This whole "I am entitled to better because i spend money" is what makes everyone hate us.

I am not sure that is what is being said here or not. I personally have had one problem with JJ's attitude...or his preceived attitude...from early on. He would often complain that there was not enough fan support, but he never once, that I recall, thanked the fans who did come loyally game after game (good or bad) for their support. It is a two way street my friend.Mustangsabu wrote: And that right there is why no-one should ever want to coach here.

All the diehards (the ones there to support the kids and the university) are already coming to games. Unfortunately that's a small group and if June wants it to be larger then he's going to have to do better than beat up on nobodies and get curb-stomped by the teams that people in this city actually care about. I think we're entitled to better because we have a great product to sell, all we need is a HC interested in selling it (see SMU basketball for more).
