Texas Tech DE transferring
I don't know how big a role he was supposed to have this year, but it doesn't hurt to weaken them a little more. A couple of Tech fans I work with are acting like this is the end of the world.

With as much personnel loss as Tech as had there is no reason we should not beat them.

Slow down there. I agree that we "can," but saying we "should" is a little premature, if you ask me. From the games I saw last year, they're still faster than we are, and Kingsbury is new but obviously can cook up a potent offense. Vegas will still favor Tech by a touchdown or so, and Vegas doesn't have all that money by setting lines for upsets.
According to Phil Steele's mag, Tech has:
Its top rusher, 2 of the top 3 and 3 of the top 5 back.
A QB (Brewer) who played a little but completed almost 71% of his passes and never got picked.
4 of its top 6 receivers back, including some guy named Jace Amaro, who is 6-4, 257. What CB is going to handle a guy like that?
A big D-line that goes 281, 286, 290 across the front.
An offense that averaged 37.5 points per game last year and put up 500 or more yards of offense 6 times, and should be better with Kliffy running the show this year.
A team that went 8-5 last year and 4-5 in a conference that's tougher than Conference USA was.
It's true that we're not opening with Oklahoma or something here. There's no question we can beat Tech, but we'll have to play really well and hope they're still working out some kinks.

I am jumping on the PonyBoy and Mustangabu bandwagon. If you are scared of a 6-4 200+ pound wr then you definitely will not like playing Rutgers. Tech's depth is down and that is not a big d line. They are a little lightweight at NT. Vegas takes their money off the top so they don't care whether you or lose they just want a lot of people to bet. A win at home against Tech I say. GO SMU.

Re: Texas Tech DE transferring
I also say GO SMU. I'm with you there.
I also didn't say anyone should be scared of a 200+ WR ... but 257 is rare, and apparently he's not just a big dude without talent (2nd team All-B12 last year).
Again, I'm not saying we can't win. I'm just not saying we should.
I'll say it (with you) again: GO SMU!

Didn't Tech lose a lot on defense and on their offensive line? But you do make a case for the hardcore June Jones supporters if SMU loses. So we can't just play well and beat them? We have to play well and hope they are still working out some kinks?

Call it whatever you want. I think that they have more talent overall, although the gap appears smaller than it has in years past. So yes, we have to play better than they do to beat them IMO. If you want to phrase it differently, that's cool.

No, I am just repeating what you said in that we have to play better AND hope they are still working out some kinks. Playing better is in our team's control but the other team working out kinks is not. If we have to depend on something out of our control to beat a down Tech team that is not good. But if we can rely on what is in our control to beat them then that is good. I guess we will find out on game day.

OMG, maybe we're saying the same thing but saying it differently. Maybe "working out some kinks" wasn't the right way to say it. Whatever. I think Tech has more overall talent, and to beat them, we have to play better than they do. If each team plays at 100%, I think they win. If playing better means they're "working out kinks" then that's what it is. If it means we just have a better day than they do, that's fine, too. If it means we're more talented than I thought or they're less talented than I thought, that's also fine. I don't care how we win -- I just hope like hell that we do.

Unfortunately, in looking at season opening games during the JJ era (or any other post DP season openers), its hard to believe our offense comes out looking very good plus given the fact that the team won't have gone full speed until kickoff. Hopefully this will be the year our season opener woes changes.........

Re: Texas Tech DE transferring
Jace Amaro is essentially a TE with the size, speed and skills to play WR, TE or slot. He's a matchup nightmare, I think he was out for about half the year last year. If we had a Phil Bennett defense, he could go all Rashaun Woods on us
Re: Texas Tech DE transferring
Just remembered that Jace Amaro will serve a 1/2 game suspension v SMU for punching a Minneesota player during their bowl game.

While I believe that we can beat Tech without having player defections, suspensions, etc. I will take it. I wanna steam roll them. Go 'Stangs!
