The American won't be left out....at least in the beginning.
IMO, the AAC and MWC will be invited to the party while CUSA, WAC, MAC, and Sun Belt all get left behind. After a couple of years the stipulations on what constitutes membership in this new Division Four will shake out (i.e. athletic budgets, stipends, etc.) and the schools that are lagging behind in the MWC and AAC will then get sent down.
Unless SMU absolutely tanks in the next 2-3 years we should be okay. The schools that are on the bubble are probably UNLV, Hawaii, San Jose State, New Mexico, Wyoming, Tulane, East Carolina, and Temple.
