I hated half pad days cause it was full speed without the total protecting. ONe till goes to the ground and gets grass burns. One still has to block and fight off blocks at full speed. One just doesn't get smeared catching a high pass over the middle on pass skelly (OK, that didn't suck).

One could conduct the majority of practice without 'full' contact but as some point a little full speed is needed. In 1980, our three a days changed significantly in that we stop hitting so much. We limited it to a few days instead of most the time. Injuries dropped off from previous years. So we started the year healthy.

Everything has pluses and minuses. I just hope Jones finds the 'just right' approach were the team is ready Aug 30th and not too beat up.
Going all the way back to giving the QBs red jerseys, coaches have understood that keeping your key players healthy is the key to winning. With the size and speed of players today, lots of hitting is a recipe for losing.

Would losing Shead to a concussion in practice help the Ponies win?
Would losing a starting LB to a concussion suffered in practice help the Ponies win?

Some people say that when you don't go full speed is when you get hurt sometimes. Anyway didn't we lose J. R. Richardson last year in non hitting practices?

Ironically, our D hasn't really been the problem, it's been our passing game and our offense in general that's out of sync and has put our team behind the 8 ball and in an untenable position. Our D holds up fairly well until our O goes 15 three and outs in a row...which would make any D snap.

We usually take about 4 or 5 games to get in sync. Hopefully the with Mumme's new ideas it won't take that long.

Not that they aren't in condition, but given the propensity for our offense to not be in sync the first couple of games, perhaps the "D" should do extra conditioning?

Defense took some time to come around in the Baylor game but the rest of the season they played well.

D finished 109 out of 120 v the pass according to one of the preview articles recently posted. I'd consider that a problem

That isn't a tackling problem. That is a skill problem which will be resolved this year.

I still think that losing earlier in the season has more to do with the quality of opponent than hitting in practice.

It definitely helps when you don't have to take a few games to get use to full speed hitting.

No depth at corner and 3 new starters probably had the biggest impact with the bad secondary...that and general skill/talent/depth problems in the D in general.

BTW, I'm not an advocate of no or very limited hitting in practice, I just think too many of our early season problems are being attributed to the lack of hitting when our major problem is our offense taking 8 games for our offense to get in sync.

Are you saying you think the results would have been different if SMU tackled in practice before those games?
