Depth
Could this be the deepest we've been post-DP? On offense, I think absolutely. In our defensive secondary I think yes. My biggest concern on this whole team is the middle of our defense (aside from Darrian Wright, I'm really concerned about NT and ILB depth).
Having said that, as I read these practice reports, I hope these coaches use a "WR by committee" approach. We have enough depth to rotate 2 (or 3) NEW guys on each play. That, coupled with a stud RB (or 2), should really ease the pressure on Gilbert. Nice, easy quick passes and then a few deep ones occasionally. Also we are deep at OL. This offense should really be the most prolific we've seen post-DP (on paper anyway). Think about it. Here are the WRs:
Potential Starters:
- Thompson
- Joseph
- Johnson
- Holman
2nd String:
- Gaines
- Taylor
- Walker?
- Lagasse
- Stewart?
3rd String:
- Hollman (so what if he can't catch, he's a big body and can block!)
- Acker
- Guinyard
- Nelson
- Holyfield
That's a lot of guys to rotate in and wear out a defense. Imagine rotating out the 1s and 2s and combinations thereof constantly (and throwing in Acker every one and a while). If we can't put up big numbers with this rotation, I don't know what to tell you.

Re: Depth
Jones in 4 years has never rotated even when the starters played badly. I would love to see it since our first four aren't particularly standouts. I think some second team guys could be effective.

Agreed. It's time to change that.Treadway21 wrote:Jones in 4 years has never rotated even when the starters played badly. I would love to see it since our first four aren't particularly standouts. I think some second team guys could be effective.

Re: Depth
I was assuming Cedric would redshirt, maybe even Halverson (we are already stacked in their positions and Cedric could hit the weight room a little more). Also, I think Jerry Saena will redshirt - give him a year in the weight room as well. Not sure who else will red shirt.JasonB wrote:Left out halverson and Cedric, who both are going to be second team or pushing for a starting spot.

Re: Depth
I've actually seen Cedric Lancaster play receiver. He looked pretty mediocre to me-not much of a factor when his team desperately needed plays from WRs. He had less than 9 yards per game receiving during Lamar's 16 game season- 138 yards receiving and 1 TD. He looked a lot better at CB-he'll be playing CB by next spring. Someone said he may be the fastest WR on the team-despite track training for 4 years he runs about an 11.0 flat 100 Meters-if he's the fastest we got we've got problems. I'm sure Derr'ck Thompson is faster. Unless he contributes on special teams he'll likely redshirt. He's also 5-8 which is probably why teams weren't beating down the door in recruiting. I was impressed with his coverage skills-if he was 5-11 he would have been highly recruited

Re: Depth
I have t been out to practice this fall, but if I had to guess, here are the position battles:
Thompson-Taylor-Lancaster
Holman-halverson-ace-Holyfield
Joseph-Nelson-lagasse
Jj-Stewart-Deion-guinyard
Gaines is probably also inside when they go to the h back set
So maybe Lancaster does redshirt.

Re: Depth
No rotating at WR unless Mumme gets JJ to change, no matter how worn out our wr's get or how poorly they perform. I am encouraged that wr's seem to be catching balls in practice this year vs last year when reports had our guys dropping everything
Re: Depth
With a hard core JJ supporter slobbering at the mouth over some of these freshmen I am glad you took the time to give some facts. We have double digit receivers we have recruited and there were concerns last year over their performance. Now we may have to burn some redshirts because of that.Stallion wrote:I've actually seen Cedric Lancaster play receiver. Re: Depth
I think the only reason coaches are saying we have depth at wide receiver and will rotate the position is because they are all average. That is not depth. We have a bunch of non-playmakers at receiver, and no one has taken control of the position.
