Zach had a bunch of offers out of high school. I think he will be solid for us.

The word large or small needs to be defined. You can be tall and skinny which would be small or you can be short and thick with a low center of gravity which would not be small, The d line has good height but do they have the proportionate weight? 280 at NT is light and 270 at DE is borderline in a 3-4 defense. Those weights might work in CUSA but SMU is not in CUSA anymore.

Roster heights and weight are bogus. Thompson would say in interviews he was at 265.

I will use your logic though.

Torlan Pittman played nose tackle at 267 and I think he did alright.

I thought this was your best interview yet, especially the parts about how his work in the weight room translates to the field, and the differences between snapping on field goals and punts.

Torlan was 295 (SMU site shows 285) per his own words in an interview during his senior year. Also in those interviews Thompson said that he would go down to 265 in the off-season but would bulk up to actually 285 (per video) during the season. In fact in an article written before the draft it says that he lost weight and went down to 265 to play TE in the NFL. Again, we are not in CUSA anymore and will be playing bigger teams week in and week out as JJ has indicated so we need bigger players.

For what it's worth, we faced a much bigger Pitt team a couple of years ago in the Compass Bowl, and at the time, the coaches said they preferred our edge in speed over Pitt's edge in size. Maybe they were just saying what they thought we wanted to hear, but they were right. A lot of coaches (I can recall hearing Patterson, Stoops, Spurrier, Sumlin) have said the same thing.

It's true that Zach Line was too slow, just like Randall Joyner is too small. Sometimes it seems like we get so caught up in heights and 40 times that we forget to watch who can play football.

Look we can all play good in a one game situation. Pitt had a depleted coaching state as well. But to be truthful we had pretty big DE's at the Pitt game Thompson 285 and Frazier 285. But to go game after game against bigger stronger and possibly faster players you need to be the same. Coach is recruiting bigger secondary players etc. Also, those coaches that you mentioned all run 4-3 defense (do your research) where the ends can be smaller in weight. Neither Patterson, Spurrier, Stoops, nor Sumlin run 3-4 defenses you smart alec. Also, I am not talking about heights or 40 times.
