UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas -- Garrett Gilbert admits his first seven games at SMU last fall were a learning experience. In those starts, the Mustangs went 3-4 as Gilbert threw 13 interceptions and 11 touchdowns, including a five-interception performance in a 24-16 loss to crosstown rival TCU on Sept. 29, 2012.

Its almost enough positive to think he will have a break out season. But that could never happen to a SMU QB could it?

I do think he has the opportunity of a lifetime to have a great year and get significant national media coverage (the Eastern schools and those big media markets are a plus).

Justin Willis had a breakout season - 26 TD and 6 int and .674 completion percentage. He followed that up with another 25 TD and 3,000 yrds - but many more ints.

Kyle Padron had a breakout season with 3,800 yrds and 31 TD.

Let's hope that this IS GG's breakout and the season passing TD record of 31 falls.

How many experienced Senior QBs even played as a Senior at SMU since Don King/McIllhenny? Not too many.

McDerrmott played as a Senior but he wasn't experienced. Ramon Flannigan was kind of demoted to sharing QB duties with Chris Sanders. Both were relatively successful seasons based prior SMU History

Yup. After this year, we will be looking at a QB roster with ZERO college starts.

I hope Gilbert can provide that senior touch that gets us to the BCS!
