SMU coach Jones Jones said that winning three of four bowl games has sparked confidence in the program.

He said he can tell that the current team has benefited from last season’s 43-10 victory over Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl.

“You feel better about yourself in the offseason, the workouts and everything you do carry over right through training camp,’’ Jones said. “It just becomes an attitude, positive thinking.”

Said QB Garrett Gilbert: “Winning that game gave us a big positive to think about.”

New Conference

Playing in the inaugural American Athletic Conference will pose challenges adjusting to the schemes of new teams, Jones said:

“It’s a different brand of football. It’s going to be an experience for UConn and Rutgers to play us just as it is for us to play knockdown drag-out football because they’re big and physical and run the football at you.’’

About 500 reserved tickets remain for the Aug. 30 opener against Texas Tech at Ford Stadium. Athletic director Rick Hart said extra general admission seats will be made available in the south end zone.

Hopefully the carry over can be in recruiting and we can finish this class out strong.

Reading between the lines, I thought he indicated that the Big East holdovers might be shocked by our Spread Offenses and our speed (SMU, UCF, et. al.) and we (ex-CUSA teams) may be in for some "smash mouth" running offenses. Gonna be interesting year.

I saw Temple play at Uconn last year. Both teams ran "pro style" offenses ... from the 70's. It was like watching grass grow.

I watched Rutgers play the Beloved Razorbacks last year and they didn't seem to be a smash mouth run team. Instead, they use very athletic and strong receivers to beat the Razorback CBs passing.

yeah I think he's talking about speed. TCU in the MWC is a good example. Several MWC Coaches commented that they had trouble matching up with TCU's speed-better athletes in Texas. Usually better linemen or OLM in East
