Jones wears black sweats with SMU logos at practice every day. There were times (maybe every game — don't remember) when secondary coach Derrick Odum wore a green golf shirt on the sideline so the DBs could find him. There was a time years ago (either Bennett years or Cavan years — don't remember that, either) when the linebackers coach wore white gloves on the sideline so his hands would stand out against the wall of red jerseys behind him while he signaled in calls from the sideline. Happens at other schools, too. It's not coaches being dismissive of school colors, but simply trying to be clearly visible on the sideline.
You said a lot of schools do this. Could you name 2 others.
It doesn't matter if he could name 20 schools, we want J.J. to represent S.M.U. with our colors.

I understand. I am just curious as to what other schools do it (wear non school colors on the sidelines). I have not noticed it before.

Wonder why black is more visable than blue? Jones can wear whatever he wants but I am tired of hearing the "so he can be visable" excuse. He can be visable with a school color.

June wears black simply because he likes black, if someone stopped by our practice
that wasn't familiar with our school colors they would assume our colors are red and black
because that's what June and the team wears.

I think it's ridiculous June has never really embraced Dallas and our school colors, but hey I am not going to get upset about it as long as SMU is going to bowl games, mostly winning them, and seemingly recruiting better players than we were before June got here. June has his quirks and baggage, but pretty much anyone we get in here to coach is going have some odd idiosyncrasies.

The dude is just a contrarian to the core. If everybody didn't wear socks, he would be wearing socks. He has and always will march to the beat of a different drummer. As long as we are winning I suppose it's just something we should accept.

What color did he wear in Hawaii when they wore black and what color did he wear when we wore black in the bowl? If he wore black in those instances then it undermines the argument that he wears it to be visible.

Accept to the point I can't do anything about it, but it does bother me.

I think that's a little silly. I think he wears black because he doesn't give a damn and wears whatever he wants. Not as a personal F.U. to smu

The Texas Ticks bed raiders should be blacked out when we play them.

And to be fair, much of our fanbase is exactly the same way. Ditto the students wearing burnt orange around campus

Not as a personal F.U. to smu I didn't say it was "a personal F.U. to smu"? I said he was/is a contrarian.... this isnt about SMU per se, it's about him he would be a contrarian whether he is at smu or most other places if he was @Tulsa he wouldn't be in "old gold, royal blue, & crimson" either of course he wears "whatever he wants"....that's pretty obvious. I doubt purple has always been Gary Patterson's favorite color but he wears it as do most coaches wearing their school's colors because it's who pays their paycheck but again....as long as we win...i'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I'd much rather have a winner in black than a loser dressed head to toe in red & blue!

Interesting point. It seems all the Hawaii coaches wore black. No coach wore something different to distinguish themselves visually for the players on the field. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUGNfrMQBy8

Mike Cavan was always dressed in red or blue, when congratulating the winning coach.

Although to be honest, if we wore black, Tech might throw a pick or two out of confusion. I remember Georgetown losing a National Championship hoops game because they had worn their tricked up blue (almost Carolina blue) throughout the tournament, then in the finals they had to wear grey and Carolina wore the blue, and Billy Martin made that ill fated pass to Michael Jordon.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
