I don't spend too much time watching the band of any team but I like the energy of UH's.
I believe Hobart William Smith has more in common with SMU than UH does. HWS's Forbes ranking is #140 vs. low 80s for SMU. SMU academics are much better. It has a FBS football team and much more research activity and international reach. However, the student body is similarly well off and tuition costs are rather comparable.
HWS '16 profile:
Median family income (with need > or = 0) $144,022
Costs (2012-2013)
Tuition $43,484
Total Cost $56,000
I believe SMU's average family income from all students (not just those in need) is around $200K. Tuition is $39K and total cost is $57K.
UH's total cost, including on campus housing, is $23K. I'd guess that the average family income is more like $75-80K. The average SAT score of the 600 incoming Honors College students is over 1340. Most of those students could get into SMU. Why did they choose UH? I believe SMU has a large opportunity with average income families who consider SMU out of reach cost-wise.

UH's band isn't that bad, if more "typical" of college bands. They played a good 4 Minutes with a dance break even though I think I saw the halftime show more than one year which after going through SMU band seems lame if only because we switch songs so much and rarely repeat halftime shows across seasons. Quick question, does the UH band include music major students?tristatecoog wrote:I don't spend too much time watching the band of any team but I like the energy of UH's.

The percentage is 50/50 half music majors and half non music majors.

Our music majors are discouraged or forbidden from joining. I'm sure there's a perfectly (un)reasonable explanation.tristatecoog wrote:The percentage is 50/50 half music majors and half non music majors.

I suppose Malonish that this mindset emanates from the "Era of Men" in the Mustang Band and when few of those fruitcakes could have taken the punishment as a Freshmen. We had a few music majors, but only a very few.

They didn't have what it took in the "Era of Men" as I explain above.malonish wrote:Our music majors are discouraged or forbidden from joining. I'm sure there's a perfectly (un)reasonable explanation.tristatecoog wrote:The percentage is 50/50 half music majors and half non music majors.

We have had a few like that pulled double duty and they were awesome. No trombones that I know of. I think one of those professors thinks the trombone parts will ruin the students' pretty lips or something. It didn't ruin mine, I've always been this fugly.
