Stealin' money, Hawaiian style

Postby newshound » Sat Aug 31, 2013 8:10 am

So, six years in and June Jones has ...

> Yet to recruit a receiver better than any of the guys Phil Bennett left him (Beasley, Robinson and Sanders, all in the NFL). He had the nuts to call Darius Johnson "the best receiver I've ever coached." Uh, DJ is likely not playing on Sundays, I don't think.

> Yet to recruit a legit running back (Zach Line, who you have to love, was a converted LB they moved to the position in desperation). He even tried to get that kid who had served a lengthy jail sentence, but ended up at New Mexico State.

> Yet to develop a legit QB (throwing 3-yard dumpoffs to amass 41 completions and 400-plus yards is not what I remember seeing Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan do at Hawaii).

> Yet to recruit a placekicker. The guy kicking is the same guy they found out of desperation and still can't kick (see the missed 27-yard FG from the middle of field a la Ben Crosland)

> Lost to a rookie head coach with a true freshman walk-on quarterback from the same high school as his former No. 1 overall national recruit, Garrett Gilbert.

> Taken credit for Margus Hunt, who was hand-delivered to him by a track coach without a men's track team.

> Lost 5 of 6 season openers and would have lost the one he won if Division I-AA Stephen F. Austin could have made a short FG.

> Stolen in the neighborhood of $13 million dollars.

But, we have new lights at Ford Stadium!

Anyone else think we got damaged goods? Bowl games notwithstanding in 6-6 seasons, we are still light years from TCU and Baylor.

Please, if there is a God, somebody make sure this man does not even sniff a contract extension.

Let's hope he is "coaching" his final 11 games (or less) at SMU.

Aloha means GOODBYE!

Silence is deafening here. Where are the June supporters to refute a single word of this? Yep. Thought so.

Certainly surprised he hasn't recruited a stud QB and really good WRs. ES, AR, and CB were pretty good Bennett kids.

I agree. He's a middle of the road type coach and that's all we'll ever be. I think we all need to get serious about who we should replace him with. I used to be scared to have him leave bc I felt we would just get another loser coach and recede. However, we should reach deep and get aggressive -- I would love to see someone like Chad Morris. Upgrade our recruiting, our swagger, our uniforms, everything. We are positioned now to take that next leap. Let's do it.

Chad Morris eh? You realize he's making $1.3 million this year as Clemson's OC. He's not taking anything less than a high-level BCS HC job. He's already got a better job than June Jones.

For the umpteenth time. The ethnic make-up of Euless Trinity is Tongan not Samoan.

You make some fair points, and personally I like to see credit given to Coach Bennett. But at the same time:

> While pointing out the missed 27 yard FG, you failed to mention that Hover was 3 for 3 before that, including 1 at the end of the first half of more than 50 yards.

> The short crossing routes and screens are a big part of Mumme's offense. That's what he did at NMSU and Kentucky, and that's what you'll see at SMU. Dink and dunk all day to hopefully soften up the secondary, and then go deep like he did to #15 the other day. Hopefully it works more often than it did in his first game with his new team, but that's his M.O.

> As far as "taking credit" for Margus Hunt ... how should he have discussed him? "Hell no, I didn't want a 6'8" world champion athlete when we were rolling out some sub-par athletes as backups anyway, but gosh, the track coach just forced him on me"? Of course not. You're the head coach, you get blamed for players who don't pan out and credit for those who do.

> As for recruiting better WRs than Sanders, Robinson and Beasley: those guys are NFL WRs. A lot of schools don't have better ones, but it might not be fair to say he doesn't have any better. It's very early, but everyone keeps saying Taylor and Gaines looked awesome in 2-a-days, and they're bigger than any of those 3. Let's see what they become.

> That rookie head coach and freshman walk-on QB also play on a team with more talent and more big athletes. Those 2 will win some games this year.

> Which opener did "he" lose that "he" should have won? Baylor last year? How about Texas A&M the year before? Stayed close with Texas Tech the year before (10 points or so, in Lubbock), beat SFA and lost his first game with a team that simply lacked talent? Yes that first game was against Rice, and our players had very little idea what they were doing in the new scheme (see the 1-11 record). Not sure how many other coaches would have won any of those games with the teams he had.

Whether we got "damaged goods" or not, I disagree. Losing any game is not acceptable. But after the seniors he lost, if he gets us back to a bowl, I would expect him to get a new contract offer, and I wouldn't have a problem with it. No, I don't want to see 6-6 or 7-5 every year, either, but that wouldn't be a bad record this year.
