Pretty Good Offensive Stats

I don't think Gilbert threw a single WTF pass all night, he definitely was making better decisions. WR separation is going to be a problem (need to get better at this with more horizontal routes or YPA will suffer) as will run and pass blocking (was worried about this for awhile). Also need to start blocking better on these flare/bubble/middle screens. Tech blocked theirs well and it showed.

I feel sorry for Gilbert. He's finally making good decisions but this is the year that June spending recruiting season on the golf course is coming to roost.

How about all the wide open dump passes that got dropped? I'm no D-1 receiver but if I was running wide open and was thrown that pass I'd catch it. Taking the hit that comes after is a different story- flag football is known for its lack of contact but then again so are the preseason practices at SMU.

statistically this game was pretty even, but the difference is our guys are mentally programmed to lose against those big, bad Big XII opponents. I didn't see any physical dominance like we've seen in the past. Our guys just don't make enough plays when it matters and Tech did

I would have liked to have seen Burcham get a few snaps there on that last drive when we were building meaningless stats

three bad throws by gilbert. ONe he was rolling right and lead Shead a little too much on 3rd and goal. Second he had a guy open on the right flat and just threw a duck that looked like it was tipped at the line, but wasn't. Third was on a play to the left in the second half, he tried to touch it to someone 8 yards down, and just a bad through.

Much more consistent with accuracy though. The release point is much better with a year recovery from shoulder surgery.

Yep, 75 percent pass with a lot of horizontal dink and dunk. Gilbert keeps up this pace and he'll be a 4500 yard passer.

That's the bottom line. And it's all on coaching on this level (and some on recruiting) but you have to have mentally tough guys and just because you get down a touchdown mid way through the 4th doesn't mean you HAVE to give up. I understand it was hot and everybody was pretty worn out, but that's when you have to dig deep (as Bear Bryant said, if you're an "8" playing against a "10" you have to want it more and maybe you catch the "10" playing like a "9" enough times and that's when you can whip him).
